Apparently you can grow food on straight soil layers now (again I'm told). Interesting...

I don't know if this can be done, but, I want to build a pit trap into a room filled with bees... watch goblins get stung to death. I wonder if you can agitate bees by splashing them with water or something...

Also, I like the embark screen, just wish May Green/Therapist were updated already  :D

So just how am I supposed to get started with bees?  Bees have to start out on the map somewhere?  How do you know if you start out with bees?

Open up creatures tab and look for them?

Magma furnaces appear to be gone, I don't see them when building kilns to test the new ceramics stuff.

Also... these maps look pretty desolate, now.  Even in the caverns, you open one up (they seem like there is less space between surface and cavern, now) and you see nothing but the same siltstone as far as the map is revealed.

I guess this is part of the "caravan" stuff, where things are more rare, so you have to trade for them, now, but if we're going to be restricted in what we can mine, I hope that if/when I actually can find something, there's more than 4 tiles of it, because the only non-layer stones I'm seeing are a few useless gems in the same tiny clusters I've always found them in...

It's like after the last few versions, and all the complaints of overabundant everything, now, we embark, and we're lucky if we find microcline.

Yeah, things probably just went a bit too far in the other direction.

Ok...I embarked on a site that said it had deep metal.  So while building my fortress expecting metal to start showing up after the 2nd or third cavern, I had my miners to dig down for some.

I'm at the magma sea.  No metal.  None, not even any cluster stone or gems.  It's all solid diorite, marble, slate, or Quartzite.  Is that a bug or is spoilerite not available everywhere anymore?  That's the only metal I found anywhere.

I think this  thread had pretty much the latest on the metal situation.

Bah from the findings on that thread looks like I'm SOL.  My lower levels where folks seem to be finding trace amounts of deep metals is all marble.  My exploratory shafts have found nothing so far, and even if I find something I won't find anything useful in marble.  The spoilerite vein looks to be nice sized though.  Hopefully the whole thing isn't hollow.

I ordered metal from the caravans, but unless they bring the stuff 20 or 30 bars at a time now I won't have any defenses by the time the gobbos show up.  So far it's looking like a successful military defended fort is an impossibility without supertraps to harvest the first few shipments of goblinite.

Another bit of an oddity.  My home civ has no access to iron. (which is pretty ridiculous since they own the almost the entire south side of the world) yet I can still order steel bars from them.

Hey, I've got the Lazy Newb Pack, can I just replace the old version of DF in the LNP folder, or do I need to redownload?
