Fever-causing gas from nowhere?!
« on: February 15, 2011, 05:38:55 pm »

Okay, so...I was looking at the stairwell/execution pit into my caverns, and I notice a cloud of miasma. Now, there IS an indoors refuse stockpile near there, but it's constructed in such a way that miasma shouldn't be able to get out of it. Then suddenly, I see some animals running about with a flashing red x over their icon. I check their wounds screen, and it says they have a fever!

I shouldn't have claimed the food from that olm men camp that got slaughtered by an FB...

So, are fevers lethal? How long do they take to pass?

So far it only seems to be affecting my animals...

Edit: HOLY FUCKING COCK. I JUST LOOKED AT A CHILD, AND IT HAS ROTTING FEET.

FUUUUUUUUCK.

...so, amputations for everyone?

If itīs the same thing that my dwarves in an earlier version got from an FB,
which was some kind of extremly dangerous rotting fever,
then yes, amputations might save some (will cause a bloody mess in your hospital),
others might die however.
And it might be extremly contagious, contact with lost body fluids (blood, vomit etc. )
will suffice to spread the illness.

But I assume that your fever might be more harmless,
if it wasnīt caused by an forgotten beast

My hospital doesn't seem to have anyone in it. Lemme check what the Chief Medical Dwarf is up to.

Can I jump on this thread too?

I've just taken out the 30somethingth FB in my current fortress, a rather nasty skinless worm with a deadly breath. Five dorfs sit in my hospital now with severe rot across their entire bodies.

Does anyone else have experience of fixing this syndrome in game? Or am I to expect that my surgeons & diagnosers will simply not be able to keep up removing the rotten tissue from the dorfs as fast as it decays?

Feel a tad sorry for the poor med-dwarfs, busy in the hospital that's filled with miasma and blood and extract everywhere.

Make sure to keep some soap. And yeah, med-dwarves can get infected too.
Honestly, i think that the best way to deal with infection is actually let infected die in closed room. Seal it (build walls to cover door) and never open again.

usual methods for cleaning fb crap are : making channels basket-filled with 2/7 water, they will clean anyone passing through, setting a lot of dedicated doctors and cleaners, butchering all sick animals and locking off all healthy ones.

I don't understand, though that is about right with anything DF related.
I just hope he dies the same death that all dwarfs deserve: liver disease.
