trash compactor help
« on: February 15, 2011, 12:58:30 pm »

ive built a little alcove in the wall with a single tile bridge in the center, and a floodgate to seal the entrance. everything is hooked up, the bridge is lifted, the floodgate is open, ive placed an active dumping zone beneath the bridge, turned off my stone dump, designated all my hair/cartilage/vermin remains for dumping, but no dwarves are moving the garbage into the compactor. any idea why?

Are the fortresses there for psychological reasons?  Are they trying to hold back entropy itself, rather than the goblin hordes?

Are the remains outside?  Did you remember to turn on gathering of refuse from outside?

ETA:  A single-tile drawbridge forms a wall when raised.  Your drawbridge needs to be at least two tiles.

If a single tile raising bridge is in the lifted position, it is an impassible tile, and as such, nothign can be dumped in the space it occupies.  Thankfully, all you need do is lower your bridge and let your dwarves do the dumping.  When you raise the bridge, all items occupying that tile will cease to exist.  This is the benefit of a single tile compactor.  With a 2 tile compactor you raise the bridge and place the stuff under the section which raises, then lower it.  If you happen to put stuff on the raising tile of the bridge when it is in the lowered, then raise it, it will spread that stuff out in a random direction, making quite a mess.

i made it into a two tile compactor, raised the bridge and put a dumping zone underneath the raised part but they wont move the trash? I have plenty of available dwarves with refuse hauling...

A one tile bridge works for my compactors... although, unless its at the end of a long hallway, instead of smooshing stuff out of existence agains the wall (that's right, I do it by dropping the stuff down a hole, onto the bridge, then raising the bridge.), it just kind of scatters it everywhere...

I think if there is an open adjacent tile, the items may not be atomized properly

I usually have a 3x3 chute with a 3x4 bridge at the bottom.
Works well for me.

(o)rders -> (r)efuse -> Dwarves Dump (o)ther.

I think. I'm sleepy, and I don't have the game running, but I think that's the option you want to set. I swear sometimes it's just turned off at random.
