Cavern collapsed on game start
« on: February 04, 2008, 12:43:00 am »

As soon as I started a game, I get the message "A section of the cavern has collapsed!"  It should have collapsed long before your dwarves got there.  If part of the cavern collapsed on your dwarves, they would all die.

An easy solution to this would be to check the entire region for tiles that should collapse at region creation time.

Something similar probably goes for magma vents...

Is it possible that your area started with an overhang that extended to a cliff that your area didn't include?

Does DF have overhangs? I can't recall seeing one except above magma vents, and those spawn after all terrain is generated and are the primary cause of instant cave-ins...

I have seen an overhang.

I have an overhang in one fort - it seems to be a breeding ground for cave spiders (just the normal type, thankfully - no giant ones).  It's kinda strange, really, since it's like a large cavern cut into the z level at the bottom of a cliff.

Anyway, I bet those empty lava tubes could cause a collapse the same way lava vents do.  Perhaps even rivers or chasms (I doubt the former, though).
