I hate Apple.  They aren't ecological, their product design is everywhere to the point of making me rage, and (though this is more of an irritation at the users than the company) I'm kind of tired of people Googling things in the middle of real-time arguments.  They don't actually know; they just have access to something that knows for them.

Same thing goes for pulling out Youtube videos and texting, as well as the damned irritating habit of closing other people off with one's headphones.  If you're my friend and you're sitting next to me in the car, and it's dark, and I obviously have nothing to do, maybe you could at least offer me a listen or, I dunno, try to converse?

Plus, there's those allegations of all Apple products being made in the same town in China, where they engage in exploitative child labor.

Nuh-uh, don't think so.  I don't care how shiny it is--that's ridiculous.

And it's way over-priced, too :I

You're thinking of something else. The chinese factory Apple hires has an absurdly high suicide rate because of how badly it mistreats its workers; it doesn't use child labor. And it's an openly known fact, not mere allegations.

Bah, sorry.  I guess my professor was spreading falsehoods, then.

(Not sarcastic)

Thanks for the correction.  I remember hearing that version somewhere, too.

Actually, the seemingly high number of suicides just came from how absurdly huge the factory is and how many people it employs.  It has a lower suicide rate than the U.S.  Not sure about the child labor thing though, and there are plenty of other reasons to dislike Apple.

Lower than the US? Really? Do you have anything to back that up?

Maybe it was just a particular part of the U.S.  I'll try to find the source, but it was in an argument I noticed on a different forum, so I won't promise anything.  I guess take what I said with a grain of salt until I find it. :/

I recall reading about it on Ars Technica several times... hmm...

Oh wow, first page of results when searching Ars Technica includes a link to an article talking about "child labor" at the chinese factory, although on reading it it seems they were 15, so less than a year underage even by US law. It also said they were all either no longer working there, or were no longer underage by the time the story came out... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/apple/7330986/Apple-admits-using-child-labour.html

Here we go, Leaked report: worker abuse, violence continues at Foxconn.
Quote
Despite widespread reports that Foxconn had given employees a 30 percent raise earlier this year, the newspaper claims that workers got a maximum of 9.1 percent while losing many of their other benefits and bonuses.
Quote
Additionally, 38.1 percent of those surveyed said their privacy had been invaded by management, and 16.4 percent reported being subject to "corporal violence."

Plus, there's those allegations of all Apple products being made in the same town in China, where they engage in exploitative child labor.

Perhaps I exaggerated a little, I just recall reading about a number of suicides taking place in it's factories, if memory serves.

Yo ho ho Mateys!

I hate apple either, some of my classmates own  an iphone (some of them even a macbook) but mostly they got it as a gift and (of course) didn't give it back.

But one of them is so horrible....
He owns nearly every apple product and says senteces like, well...
B: "I have to save money, to be able to buy that guitar."
A(that Apple guy): "Why? It costs just 800€" (in US-D)

[EDIT]: Well I want to tell you, that this guy is in the States at the moment (in Oregon). So he's your problem now  ;)

You see... Alienware is also expensive, but they sell quality goods and they look good.

I mean:

Buying an Apple product you buy a piece of crap with a glowing apple, which isn't even completely uneaten!

Buying Alienware, you buy a computer, great for playing games, with a glowing Extra Terrestrial being on it!
looks awesome, right?

Greetings, Love your Forum!

I am pretty indifferent, but my father actually seems to be an Apple fanboy (complete with neXtcube and some old apple computers in his room). At least he doesn't gush about it (when I'm around at least).

Alienware is what homebuilders compare their builds to while laughing at the price difference.
Price difference goes with the 'brand name' and logo.  Not worth it.

I think it's a perfect comparison: both are absurdly expensive, but Apple delivers only the most subpar of garbage, while Alienware actually provides quality. One could build something comparable or superior to Alienware at home, but it still provides quality, whereas Apple does not.

I really don't understand the hate. As far as design goes, I don't see many competitors to apple's computers, and mostly crappy alternatives to music players. I also haven't experienced that good of customer support from any other company, ever.

Design: Even though I'm an ubuntu guy now, I don't think I can switch to another laptop maker. The touch pad is huge, the click and 2nd click are ambidextrous and represented by a single button. The disk drive is slot loading. The power cord is magnetic (with less wear, more reliable connection, and less danger to the computer). The screen and sleep light change brightness by the ambient light. The keys are backlit on demand. The case in aluminum instead of cheap and thin plastic. The screen joint is recessed, and it doubles as the wireless antennae. If I found a cheaper, more reliable laptop with most of these features, I'd switch instantly. However, I haven't found any with half of these features, and most of them I feel are essential.

portable music players suffer a similar fate. Without going into great detail (there are a lot of options and a huge lack of standardization), I haven't found a portable music player that is as intuitive to use and manage as the iPod/iTunes combo.

Support story:
My wife's macbook pro (used to be mine) has had several problems in its life. The graphic card melted off, the corner got chipped, a key broke off, and the disk drive made some really funny noises. The key and the funny noises I can blame on my own mistreatment of the thing, and the graphics card issue was a known issue with that particular card among all manufacturers. When we took the computer in each time, they repaired it with no questions asked, and more that we didn't complain about. The battery was dying, they replaced it. They key broke, they replaced the entire top (including the chipped piece). half the parts of the laptop are basically new, including parts that they weren't liable for.

with an old iPod nano (won't buy another one, the new ones are ugly and the iPod touch's are expensive), the screen had a black bar across the middle. Looking at the back, the culprit was apparently a dent from one of the many times I dropped it, and those things are pretty thin. I took it in, the guy noticed the dent and said "we'll pretend we didn't see that", and gave me a new iPod.

I don't like all their software, and I hate how quickly software becomes obsolete with new OS versions, but I can barely say enough good things about their design decisions.

In all fairness, apples high end desktop computers are far superior to what PCs could deliver. They are mostly by professional graphical artists, desingers, etc. Of course they arnt suitable gaming, and are also annoying little smartasses when you try to install cracked software on them (or so I heard...).

But, the argument that apple only charges more money without delivering more performance is wrong there at least.

As for all the tablet PCs, iphones and whatnot: I realy dont care the least for those. Regardless of the brand, they cost far more than they are worth to me. I have an ipod, and though it annoys me that I have to install itunes for it and that it still refuses to properly display album covers, it has lasted throughout quite some years of somewhat careless treatment.

All in all the main dislike I have towards apple is that everything related to their damned products has to be apple. Both hardware and software is trying its very best to be incompatible with anything not apple.
