Do Elfs need a new wood type?
« on: February 15, 2011, 04:15:32 am »

I didn't see a thread about this subject when I searched, so I think I'll ask.

Elfs are a bit underpowered. Wooden weapons and armour isn't that great, when all is said and done.

So how about they have their own unique wood type, that is hard enough and sharp enough to be equal to (at least) copper? Make it rare and valuable stuff, only growing in Elf Retreats. I know the Genesis Mod does this, and it seems to work out well. It would make them better in Adventure mode, and better allies / challenges to your military in Fortress mode.

Modders can help you out here! It is easy to make a wood with specific propertys and give it to the elves. I'm sure if you head over to the modders forum they will do there best to help.

Or, you could try Deon's genisis mod, it has three elf entitys, all of them with deadly weapons. I'm also working ona  mod that will have elves a little more deadly, but it isn't out yet.

Well, yes, modders have done as such. And I will ask them. But I was suggesting that perhaps it should be made an official thing as well?

Imo not only wood needs to be remade but bones and leather as well.
For example why dragon bone properties are the same as cat bone?

Certain bone/leather types need to be sturdier.

And yeah elves need some kind of "metal" wood in official DF releases.

id say yes and no, yes as in dragon leather or just alligator leather should be better then pig leather

no as in bone is bone, a mammoth uses the same composition of bone (ivory is something else) as a squirrel, and the only difference is you could carve far more arrows from a mammoth bone then a squirrel bone (fishes are an exception, they don't have bones tbh, lizards and dinos have small composition changes but overall its not enough to validate a change of approach in this game)

Yes but the bones are different sizes, the game just goes a bone is a bone, but in real life it would take thousands and hundreds of pounds to break a mammoth or dinosaur bone while a squirrel bone would just snap in two with your fingers.

Irrelevent.  Now make me an artifact floodgate out of a single squirrel's rib bone.  I don't care a thing about your silly "conservation of mass".

Of course, an elephant is the largest land animal for a reason - look at their skeleton, and you'll see their legs are almost entirely made of bone, thanks to the square-cube law

Dragons are bigger.  They are 25 metric tons to an elephant's "mere" 5 tons.

Oh right, and they breathe fire and occasionally fly and are absurdly agile and stuff too.

Dragons are magic.  If they're a 25 ton creature when the Square Cube Law says no way, then why not simply make them have bones made of some magic substance that's like bone, but made of sturdier stuff so that the dragon doesn't collapse under its own weight?  Then, it makes some logical sense that the stuff, when carved into bone whatevers would be made of a sturdier material than normal bone.

To be honest (back to OP), elves should be able to enchant their wooden items to make them as effective as metal ones. Or not quite as effective, but lighter. Or something. You get my drift.
