What you DONT want in DF?
« on: February 14, 2011, 09:57:02 pm »

While every added feature has made DF better, it's hard to think of additions that would make it worse. This far I've only come up with one:

Maintenance - As the fortress grows in size and complexity, you'd have more and more dwarves running around with the task "maintenance", doing nothing constructive. Kind of like "On Break", with the added annoyance of punishing you for expanding.

hmmm.... I can't think of anything besides elves, but who would we fight with if they were gone?

There is one in every forum.
Oh... oh god... achievements... what a pointless game addition, and how corrupting an influence on the player base.

How about flash-events!  "Press 'x' for the magma scorpions to NOT attack your booze stockpile!"

But in all seriousness I can't think of anything Toady would actually implement that I don't want (not purposeful anyway).

1. Generic magic with firebolts (will never happen)
2. Multiracial forts (might happen, but mjeh)
3. Sieges/animals becoming weaker

That was kind of pointless of me, I guess, but jah.

Fortress mode involves rapidly building floors to bounce the ball back, adventure mode is basically the same as before, but with less mapwalking and more stuffwhacking.

The first lesson taught by DF is patience.
The second: Madness.
The third: Magma, properly applied, solves all problems.

I don't want any enforced highly complex subsystems, but instead a very modular final-game experience. That is to say, I hope that Toady keeps his game complex enough to have very dynamic fortress logistics, but that none of it is so complicated that you have to choose X fertilizer in order to grow Y plant under Z-squared variables.

In even simpler terms: I don't want new core elements to make me micromanage a lot more stuff as a form of fake difficulty, but I want the option to toggle such things or easily mod them in if I'm really into such-and-such aspect of fortressing.

I would be fine with human and animal waste if it were managed sanely by the game and its community. Judging by how quirky the game is and its track record with blood/vomit/other contaminants, I would never count on the latter, and judging by half of what I've heard on the forums about it, I would count on the latter even less.
