Greece: Total War LP: Defence of Country
« Reply #16 on: February 16, 2011, 08:10:18 pm »

In the Beginning...

Ah, Greece. The most civilized civilization in the world. No other country is as advanced, powerful or wealthy. Sure, we might have been almost eliminated by Macedonia, but that's because we weren't really trying, right? We're Greeks! We can do anything.

The year is 290 BC, and Europe looks as follows:

Looks nice, eh? Problem is that most of our beloved brothers are being oppressed by barbarian overlords. I mean, look at this!

Look at all the Greek cities that have decided to join our cause! Only Sparta, Rhodes, Pergamum and Thermon! And of our mighty colonies, only Syracuse is still free! The rest are either submitting to foreign rulers, or have decided not to stand with us. (I'm looking at you, Athens)

Of course, this cannot stand. Therefore, the first thing we must do is defeat the Macedonian barbarians who are oppressing us Greeks on our own soil! Look at the injustice, they've even destroyed Thebes! Will you let the memory of mighty Thebes fade away? Thankfully, a little spear point diplomacy has convinced Corinth to come join us, and talks with Athens was going well until a Macedonian army showed up and besieged the place. That is not all. They even had the gall to attack Thermon! Those bastards!

Luckily, despite being outnumbered by 600 to 900, and having only 80 actual hoplites, our worthy Greek brothers have repulsed the Macedonian barbarians, though not without loses. The keen archers of Rhodes were perhaps our best warriors in the battle. The set one of the three Macedonian rams on fire. Thus the Macedonians could only make a breach in two places, one of which was covered by the brave hoplites of Thermon. The many Macedonians were sent to the underworld on their spears, and even if our men were only militia, they still showed the valour of an Achilles or Ajax. The second breach was covered by one of our brave family members, who routed the enemy many times, and while he was killed in the fighting, his sacrifice allowed the Greeks of Thermon to remain free. Alas, these brave men were killed one by one, while the warriors of Macedon looked endless. The archers of Rhodes proved their worth once again. A single volley of flaming arrows was enough to turn the bravest of Macedonians' bowels into liquid. Of the 600 Greeks who defended the settlement, mostly pelasts I might add, 121 men were left. However, the 900 Macedonian warriors, members of their elite, were never heard of again, either dead in our streets or cowering in the hills.

Alas! The city of Syracuse knew the taste of the invader's sword soon after Thermon.

Spoiler: Siege of Syracuse (click to show/hide)

After such a heroic victory, the hearts of our men were lifted, and encouraged to greater deeds.

Aw, you picked small army size. :P

Anyway, good job! You held off the AI and it's stupid decision to charge into a wall of spears instead of taking the ladders that were already on the wall.

You have to do it before you start a new game, it's in the options-gameplay menu I beleive.

Bah, painted faces fops, they don't fight like real men of the north, but they did well enough.

Painted? Fops? Face!?!? I'll have you know that each Greek is worth two barbarians, no matter how trained or equipped they are!

(They just can't hold walls. Or fight outside of a phalanx. Or ride horses well.)

Still, their Pointy Sticks more than make up for those defects.

The only thing the pointy stick fops have over the men of the northern isles is they aren't forced to have crappy melee chariots for their general cav.

I kid kid, Greek cities are actuilly tied for my second favorate side, Brutii is tied with them since it has a nice balance compaired to the other roman sides.
Love the map btw, everyone but greeks are barbarians, some barbarians are just more.....acceptible than others.

Oh man, The phalanx at the gate tactic. I would say it's really over-powerd because 3 hoplites can stop a full stack if they only charge through the gate :P Not to say i don't myself use it. In the east and north with all cav armies the real FUN starts.

Good style, will keep following

I really need to figure out how to use it, mine aren't working.

I like the map though, I've got a good dose of the Greek superiority complex coming in my next update, but then they die.

Bah. If they were real Greeks, and not the descendents of Romans, they would have taken the city.
