Catapult Ammo: Alternatives
« on: February 14, 2011, 05:00:02 pm »

Maybe you could mark general stuff you don't want for use as catapult ammo, like how you mark it for dumping. You could use furniture you made by accident, stupid crap you stole from the elves and bought from the humans (barrels of gnomeblight and barrels of blood come to mind), or even (the best idea, I think) skeletons!

Gobbo McInvader: Hey guys, they're launching stuff at u- OW!
Gobbo McPikeman: ...did Song just get hit in the face with a skeleton?
Gobbo McBowman: Hey, that skeleton's wearing Stasost's clothes!
Gobbo McPikeman: I think that IS Stasost...he didn't come back last year.
Gobbo McInvader: Guys? I think there's a rib stuck in my windpipe. It kinda hurts.
Gobbo McBowman: Oh well. Let's invade!
Gobbo McPikeman: Fuck that, dude, they're shooting our own DEAD at us. I'm outta here, you have fun. *Scampers off*
Gobbo McBowman: Hey, what's that coming do-
*Gobbo McBowman was crushed by a spinning rock salt cabinet.*
Gobbo McInvader: ...well, crap.
*Gobbo McInvader was crushed by a spinning rock salt door.*

Basically, it makes useless crap useful.

I DO have a couple too many farm animals...

Actually, I would go out of my way to capture, tame, breed, and train war elephants for this.

Or just make it work off of the dump tag. Also, enabling the feature on the catapult such as "allow junk to be used."

Naturally, they would look for the closest ammo to use... be it rock or dumped item.

Greek fire, preferably localised as "Armok's Piss", is also a must.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

Urist: Darn it, how the hell can we be running low on stones? We live in the stuff!
Iton: Well the stone crafters have been busy producing many mugs to trade next summer.
Urist: Stone mugs aye...?

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on one's point of view, I'm pretty sure that if Mr Welch can no longer do it in an RPG then Toady One is unlikely to let us do it in vanilla.

Why not just this:

[a] Mark as catapult ammo
[A] Unmark as catapult ammo

in the d -b menu?

Somebody would probably figure out how to designate nobles and elf caravan as ammo. Oh, an goblin prisoners.

That's easy: cause a controlled cave-in near a large number of cage traps to trap everyone, then mark the cages for launching. Much more useful than previous forms of unfortunate accident!

Lame excuse? 'Having a drink instead' is the dwarfiest reason to not get something done, short of accidentally flooding your home with magma. Or intentionally flooding your home with magma.

I have thought about this and only one thought comes to mind for me:  flaming booze barrels
(of course only the low quality sewer brew, you would't launch the top shelf stuff)
