Well whatever it was was something he probably lost gambling, and thus had to be taken from him to maintain the illusion of the officers "getting down" with normal folk.

He seems to be your first mate or similar judging by his deference to you and his clamping down on the other speaker. Search pockets for potential items, a compass, a sextant, a timepiece, anything small and of sentimental value.
