Awesomeness

I just started a(nother) new fort, and I realized that over half of a couple of z-levels near the surface are made of solid obsidian...

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

Obsidian swords are sharp, but the weapon is just a wood handle with obsidian blades (it needs a wood log and an obsidian stone), so there isn't much weight behind the impact. It tends to do very well against flesh, but can't penetrate armor.

Don't give these swords to your soldiers, put them in a weapon trap!

i would only want obsidian so i could build walls with obisdian stone/block.
and when i do that, i embark with volcano
though technically i'd most likely to fine surfacial obsidian close to volcanic regions, with volcano(s).

Only obsidian harvested from the most inner part of the planet is good obsidian.

most inner part of any terrestrial planet is nickel-iron alloy
huge mount of condensed, extremely hot but yet solidified nickel iron
obsidian is only formed on (outer) crust
or near surfacial volcano.

This is not really that special, obsidian is a fairly common layer stone in volcanic areas.  If you had looked at all the biomes before you embarked you would have probably noticed it.

But obsidian is one of the cases were geology doesn't apply ;)
Most inner part was by the way related to the outside of the mantle as the most inner "reachable" part.

ha then it makes well sense.

anyway, i recommend to build it in obsidian.
but be sure you have enough military prowess
otherwise ambushes and sieges could come real fast once you started building it.

It...it's special to me...

Especially since I took another save and attempted to mod out everything else, only to find that it was all replaced with solid rock. I trashed it pretty fast. But this time I didn't really mod anything stone related, so I'm proud of myself for finding an obsidian-rich environment entirely by accident.
