So how are you finding working with Green Stuff to be like?

It was difficult at first, especially adapting to the fact that it changes its properties over the first hour or two as I work with it. But now that I've gotten used it, that change has actually become a benefit. In the beginning it is soft and sticky which is great for sticking to armature and basic modeling. As you go along and it thickens up it becomes easier to work in detail and smooth.

It is also important to lubricate the tools all the time. I was using water at first, and then I tried water with a little dish soap, but finally found that just licking the tool was the best way to go.

(ha ha.)

well, i finally got something to show for myself.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I spent the day tweaking projection meshes and painting out errors, to arrive at this... the start of a lil dwarf civie.
It's currently using a fn massive 4096^2 map for diffuse and normal(normals not pictured). I think i'll cut it down to 2048^2 in the end.

I've got to model his pouch and knife still.

I've been told that 3dsmax models go better in the other thread, even if I disagree.

that being said, he's looking pretty good.

I've been told that 3dsmax models go better in the other thread, even if I disagree.

We could change that if enough people want to.

My rationale was to categorize based on the end product, and to avoid as little cross posting as possible. I think the word 'crafting' is implicitly physical as well. A computer generated model is 'designed' but not 'crafted.'

I mean no disrespect to computer modeling, I've done some myself, but my idea for this guild was to develop not only design understanding but skills of the hands when working with fingers and tools on a physical object.

But like I said, if we can come to a consensus on a new rational for categorization that is well enough defined to avoid confusion, then I will change it. I'm just hesitant to change it without a clearly defined alternative, as a lack of definition will kill focus.

I'm okay with either, really. computer modelling is a kinda grey area that fits neither with painting, nor with sculpting. I just think it's closer to sculpting then painting or drawing.

i didnt mean to create such a ruckus. I'd thought the 3 days or so i spent sculpting this model in zbrush + 1 day of painting in photoshop might earn it a spot in the 'crafters' guild. my mistake.

it's hardly a ruckus, just a calm discussion about what goes where.

Yep, no ruckus :)

I try to start from a pretty clear place, but the function of these guilds has always been to try and be as inclusive as possible and to change along the with the will of the members.

Japa: That is sensible if our spectrum were to have 2d work at one end and 3d work at the other. I think though that the guilds are more suited to be design at one end and crafting on the other. I mean 'design' in the sense that it was used before the fine arts were banished from beneath its umbrella. I feel that the 2d versus 3d distinction is somewhat more arbitrary when we are considering critique (the main focus of these guilds.)

I would argue that a computer model is better off in the Engravers Guild because the methodology and vocabulary of design (such as form and composition) is more useful in its critique, than say, a discussion of tools, materials or sculpting technique, which fall on the craft side of the spectrum. So although it is three dimensional, it is really more on the end with design processes than it is on the end of specific crafting techniques.

Right, about time i posted these.School can get very boring around here, so to pass time i snagged a few pieces of chalk once and started to carve them using a small box for those pencil writing sticks (you know, those mechanical pencils and their sticky writing thingies). And please ignore the black eyes on the totem, a friend decided to play retarded and tried to paint the damn thing using a marker, i couldn't get it off without damaging the damn thing, also the dwarf figure thingy is a wip.

I like the dwarf's beard and tunic, Spreggo. I can only wonder what mischievous things are in the pouch!

Very neat chalk totems, Jopax. Is the dwarf figure also made from chalk? Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one with odd blisters all over my hands. I tried to make an archery bow with a machete recently and was pretty raw afterwards. Maybe one day I'll be capable of machete sculptures.

I finished off the troll and I'm pretty satisfied with it, but I'm kind of tired of posting WIPs so I'll try to get some paint on it before I post. I added some highlights for practice to some D&D Orc miniatures that I found lying around, so all I need to get is a more complete pallet (emerald and terracotta don't really cut it) and maybe a more precise brush.

Ahasver: I don't know where you are located, but I got most of my paints at a craft store for less than a dollar each. I use to only use the citadel paints but now I realize that they are pretty overpriced for what they are.

Jopax: I like these a lot. If you can get your hands on a soft stone like alabaster, I bet you could make some pretty cool little carvings.

Okay I finished up painting my dwarf:

They are all from chalk, and the blister is from one rather long bicycle ride on a hot day with a very poor handlebar X)

I might be able to procure some more dedicated sculpting stuff, my uncle works as a proffesional sculptor and might have some spare stuff that i can take
