Made these for sculpting minis:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I try to never buy anything I can't make myself.

From top to bottom:
Double ended 'clay shaper' with two different sizes ( ~1mm & ~ 2.5 mm), made from the blue side of a drawing eraser. What the hell is that blue side for anyways?
Ball tool. Pin in stick.
Double ended pokey stabby thing with two different sized pins.
Copper shapers with a pointed paddle and a round paddle.
Copper flathead shaper / tiny pick.

I made the copper bits from wire which I hammered out with a jewelers hammer. Then I sanded them to get the various shapes.

I'm also going to experiment with making silicone texture stamps.

Reminds me of the dentist tools that are in my dad's top bathroom drawer...from who knows where, and the tools my brother uses to make his creepy candy sculptures...although he has tons more.

Also I think the blue end is for ink erasing, like you find on those erasable ink pens...effectiveness is based on its abrasiveness to paper.

I don't think my tools are sturdy enough for that :)

If you made a chess set out of those bad boys, I would cough up moolah for 'em.

That would be pretty cool. Dwarves vs. Goblins?

Yep. Just make the Rooks war elephants/troll architects, and I'll be fine.

After thinking about that Chess idea, That would be kinda fun to do! and if i make it nice enough I might be able to get some moneys for it, like you said!

what should I make it out of... any suggestions? Maybe a beginner material.

I've actually been wanting to become a little more creative and artistic, but I don't know where to start. I have a set of cheap acryllic paints, but i'm not too good at painting, crafting models, miniature or not would be very fun to do. Painting doesn't come too natural to me, but i can draw decently with pencil/ colored pencil.I'm somewhat ok at computer drawing, but only in paint, because i havent explored many other programs.

anyway, this is the crafting thread, so i'll just stick to that. any thoughts/suggestions/ideas?

Sculpy is readily available but it is not fantastic for tiny details. If you make the pieces over an inch tall you should be alright though. If you plan on making molds and casting replicas, you'll be looking at 60 - 100 $ investment.

Green Stuff (epoxy putty) is more professional and better with detail, but it costs more.

Pushing sculpy to the limits, I made a dwarf that will fit inside of my first dwarf's head. He is 7mm tall, excepting the spear and base.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'll probably give him a shield at some point.

I doubt the sculpy could hold much more detail at that scale, but it might be possible to texture the surfaces to give the impression of detail. The bigger problem is if you over work parts like the fingers, they will just fall off. I would probably need to make special tools to work work more effectively at this scale and smaller.

I'm guessing that the people who model in these very small scales use epoxy putty, maybe the really hard stuff so that they can actually carve it away.

Also, sorry for the fuzziness: taking these in macro mode through a magnifying glass.

That is ridiculous(and awesome).  You must have very steady hands!

Seconded!

I prefer the smaller one aesthetically, personally, the 'choppy' cuts give it character, and the final form just 'works'. He looks like he is made from a chunk of earth, just like a dwarf should.

Thanks all :)

My hands aren't particularly steady, but I usually rest my arm on the table while I work. Holding the figure itself still helps a lot too.

I also took this image to compare the scale to a GW Bretonnian Archer:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Yeah, that is the old old old model for the archers, but I got those models when I was in elementary school. I have the old box set (missing some, sadly) and a lot of the figures are unfinished. I just painted him up the other day for practice.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

~ 2 inches tall. Not sure what he is, I started him with the idea of a Balrog in my mind. For scale, his head is supposed to be about the size of a dwarf (6-7mm).

That's a pretty nasty looking demonic whatever-it-is. I could easily see hordes of those rampaging around.

I made this yesterday...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I read an article about some Norse chesspieces recently. I think I'll try to get something better than scented "Toy Clay!" from 1998 and go for that chiseled sort of style. When I made the above piece I was mostly fusing rather than carving, but your pieces, Spreggo, look like they're the best of both worlds. What steps did you take when making them?
