I know nothing about Kender, but I am curious what happens if you give an intelligent, trading race [CURIOUSBEAST_ITEM]...just gave it to elves, now we'll see.
Be sure to report your findings!

So far I've unfortunately had to make do with regular SCIENCE. Maybe once the elves get here we can have the other kind.

In any case, test 1 was a failure. I remembered I had a fort saved where the humans had just arrived, so I gave them [CURIOUSBEAST_ITEM] and let things play out. Sadly, no theft occured. I see this as down to one of three reasons:

1) the merchant/diplomat AI overrides the curious beast tag, and we'd need wild roaming herds of humans for this to work,

2) the merchant/diplomat AI prevents them from pathing to the shiny objects, but they'd take them if they could, or

3) some quirk of either being intelligent or their civ ethics negates the curious beast tag.

Next stop: trade goods stockpiles around the trade depot, the mayor's office gets relocated to the gem warehouse, and everybody else gets a radical ethicdectomy.

If I recall right entity editing only affects new creatures, not creatures already on the map. Perhaps you could change their ethics on stealing to ACCEPTABLE

Hey, i'd mod them in as a whole civ, only so i could genocide them and make -kender skin cloak-

This is a masterwork Kender skull throne. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It menaces with spike of kender bone. Engraves of the item is a picture of Dwarves and a Kender. The Kender is surrounded by Dwarves, the Kender looks terrified.
I'll say, you greenskins make me sick. Worse, you've derailed the thread!
I'd say that this is evidence enough that you can't mod in Kenders without everyone hating them. Or without making them significantly less annoying. So in derailing the thread we've answered your question. You can do it if you want to, and no one here would stop you, but I suggest taking a few liberties with them. Give them a bit more spice, some culture, anything to make them a bit more interesting and far less annoying.
But I like kender...Along with gnomes and a certain crazy old mage, kender are the funniest things in Dragonlance!

Well, new fortress, two caravans have come and gone, and still no theft. Tried stockpiles around the trade depot and mayor's office, tried making theft acceptable, but no good. I guess either the merchant/diplomat or intelligent creature AI just overrides whatever behavioral routine is necessary for a creature to try to steal opportunistically. Oh well. It would have been a fun quirk.
