or put two points in swimming in character gen
I'd have to figure out what to get rid of if I did that.  I don't play demigods often, and while heroes have plenty of points, I'm actually trying to move towards playing as a peasant.

Plus, I haven't figured out how to get out of water, though I assume it's the same way as getting in and you just need skill.

If you only get one point, you can still train swimming anywhere if you're careful.  You're screwed if you alt-move into "open space", since you'll fall, become stunned, and drown.  If you move into the water and there aren't any enemies nearby, you can swim as a novice until you get to adequate.

my first play ever was quite tragic but got me hooked from that point on.

started, ran for a good distance into the woods and was promptly mauled by a cougar...you can't make that shit up either.

Either Bogeymen (earlier on) Or ambushes (a little while ago) or now, fighting criminals.

First death. Story of uber heroic swordsman. (Demigod I admit-most attributes in strength and all skill points in swordsman)

So I had a Guy named Powder Strength Swordsman (named because of point distribution) and he had already ruthlessly slaughtered an entire camp of criminals, repored back, and killed a night creature. Got several other bandits to kill, rushed off to second. Running along river, All of a sudden my guy is trailing a bunch of blood. I freeze. The combat logs said that a sturgeon had ripped my foot off out of nowhere. ARGH! I continue anyway. I'm slowed though, and night falls on me. A pack of bogeymen. I proceed to chop the buggers up, and survive with onyl yellow wounds, but quite a few of them. I then arrive at the bandit camp and slaughter everyone there. I then went back and healed. (By the way this was befor eI knew about fast travel) Aaand on the way to my next bandit camp, More bogeymen came to me and proceeded to kill me in a long fight that ended up with mos tof them dead. I haven't been able to get a guy that awesome since.

My very first death was when a bunch of humans came rushing out of a house, butthurt that I had murdered one of the townspeople. This was before I got into the habit of cycling through the list of opponents to see who had the highest chance of getting their head chopped off. And I was wearing rope reed armor. I got raped.

My first death was mauling by leopards because I didn't know how to fight and ended up lighting them on fire while they attacked mr.

First death is by boogeyman although I'm very careful to be indoors by dark. I forget to sleep indoors and ended up getting slaughtered while I stumbled around in the darkness.

Bogeyman bite to the brain was my first death IIRC. They are nasty dude. If they EVER latch onto you, run like the devil. However I do enjoy deliberately stirring them up by travelling at night and then kiting (I play as demigod because I have an inferiority complex leave me alone) them until I can repetitively mutilate them.

Apart from that it has been a Musk Ox (kick to the head, splat), Sea Lamprey; which still give me shivers, and a wild yeti which chased me into a murky pool and then wrestled me until I drowned from Novice Swimming. I have a certain distaste for the water now.

My first was a copper whip to the skull. Smashing it into the brain. 1 shot. 1 kill. 1 very surprised/disappointed me. Most of my adventurer deaths are me biting off more than I can chew in a fight ( Not literally :P ). But every defeat teaches me. Maybe at some point I wont be so eager to find death. But wheres the Fun! in that.

My most recent death was, perhaps, the most amusing.

Having modded 31.21 to get dorfs and hellves back in, living in cities, I decided to go a peasant. Assaulted a few bunnies, long story short ended up with legendary dodging, shield user, wrestling and grand master striking. Wandered about a bit more killing a few night creatures and bandits for the locals, decided I wanted to fight bigger and badder things. Asked the elves where their capital Swallowstyles was, 'far to the south'. Bugger.

Went all the way south, killing a few animals for the locals, many random encounters with bears, leopards, cougars, wolves, bogeymen, a troll and a few night creatures. Found Swallowstyles, a hamlet (frickin' hamlet?!) spent a good ten minutes there looking for their queen, found her, asked for something to do (kill) and was told 'I'm flattered, but have no need of you'.

I was killed by the elven mob.

Just died to them the other night again. Had been running a swordsman and was enjoying it a lot actually, slaughtering all the little animals with ease. Then I got bored and decided to deliberately get Bogeyman-ed, thinking I could take them. Which suddenly I could, decapitated three in a row and then started mauling the last one. He was bleeding everywhere and his leg was mutilated bad... So then I triumphantly go in for the kill shot! Miss it... Bogey counterattack... fly-kick to the head pushing my previously 100% skull into my brain. So mad.

My first death were from Bogeymen.

And after dying again for the second time by those same enemies, I figured outrunning them was the only option for me to go. So as I made my third character, agility was my main ability to max out.
