Well crashes game
« on: November 08, 2007, 12:33:00 am »

I'm using 0.27.169.33 (short version), running on a laptop.

When a dwarf stands within one square of a recent, never-before-used well, the game freezes.  If I press ~3 buttons after it freezes, or click on the game window once with the mouse after it freezes (I always run DF in windowed mode), Windows kindly closes the game and brings me to the desktop, mentioning that the game is not responding.
Also, I don't know if this is related or not, but sometimes I am unable to load a saved game or run the program at all.  I am always able to get to the message "fullscreen or windowed?", but upon giving my preference (windowed, of course), I learn through an informative window that CAVE_CROCODILE (or on one memorable occasion, HIPPO) is missing, and then I promptly meet the desktop.  This time without prompting from Windows.

I am getting the same problem, The (channel below the) well is 5 levels deep, is it possible that it is bugging because it is too deep?

Congratulations, you are the 34th and 35th customers to report this bug!

Er, I mean sorry, it's already well known.  Wells don't work in this version, there is no workaround except to not use them.

Ack, my apologies.
Can I still recover my saved game without it immediately crashing (I saved just before one of my dwarves got to a well to drink from it), though?
Also, what's the deal with the missing wildlife messages?

Immediately pause and tell the dwarves not to go outside, convert them to military   and station and lock them in a room (except one non-thirsty dwarf), allow outside again, and then tell the nonthirsty dwarf to remove the well.

I just noticed when I made my test well for this post, it locked up after I designated it as a meeting hall (it was an outdoor well too -- that may be the root of the problem).

Well, that does look like a good solution, but my well unfortunately is indoors.  Also, my well was not a designated meeting hall when the game crashed, so the whole well crashing thing might not have to do with that...

Dwarves seem to drink from rivers and the like with no trouble, so just leave the water-filled channel under your dining room (or wherever), click 'i' and set it /and the surrounding squares/ as an area, then define it as a water source. Dwarves /should/ drink from it, fill buckets from it, everything you'd need a well for.

Wait a minute. Wells don't work?

I've had no trouble using them whatsoever. 33a. Made three wells in two forts, one over an aquifer, two over random other stuff. No problems using them at all.

Hmm.  I saw a post somewhere yesterday that said wells were specifically broken when the water beneath them isn't deep enough.  I have no personal experience...
