It'll never have amazing graphics.  That's going to be part of the game forever.

Imagine this game with glorious graphics, bug free and the menu polished and less confusing, wow it has to be a winner.

But I love the graphics as they are now! Ok, I won't lie.. I use the mayday tileset sometimes. But it's just to mix things up. Plus it's easier to share stories with my friend by showing him screenshots.

I look forward to the full game, but really enjoy the in-progress one as well, so I'm happy no matter what.

Off topic, I like the Wug of the avatar above.

Which does not have a soul.
Cats have souls.  However, they leave them in storage so it doesn't get sullied by their cruel actions.  :o

It isn't ready (read: worth paying for to play) now?

If I had to pay to download the next update, I'd do it.  Sure...  I'd have to sell plasma or something to fit it into my budget, but I'd find a way.

Better graphics will just slow the game down.

That's unlikely.

I wouldn't. DF is very obviously feature-incomplete, with a lot of features either missing or barely-implemented or not functioning as intended. Granted, this isn't a bad thing in and of itself, since the game is very much in development.

Unless you mean some sort of Minecraft-style deal where you'd get future updates as well. Of course, I don't think that would be the best way for this game to make money either.

toady cares little for graphics.
toady isn't a visual artist, he doesn't have the skills to make better graphics, and isn't interested sharing the development of df with anybody but three toe...
that isn't to say he will never fix the interface or provide proper graphical support, but the vanilla df will remain ASCII

Also, according to the Feb '11 report up there, he's getting several thousands in donations each month.  There's literally no need to sell it!

Plus one of bay12games's things is releasing all the games for free, so it won't ever really be for sale.

I'm hoping it'll be for sale after I have a steady, well-paying job that affords me ample free time.

So, 30+ years.
