You could mine stuff and turn them into metal shields and sell them for 19 gold each.

...and for some reason it's rubberbanding me on the spot sometimes(bad when trying to run away).
Look at your stamina. Fighting and carrying stuff over your limit will lower it and when its at 0 you cant move.

And I still haven't gotten an answer on if it uses the old or new system for armors.
Is there % resist values or a numeric AR value?

Ehm... could this possibly be free? I have never played Ultima Online, so I am quite confused how this works. Do I buy UO, then can use this server for free, or does using this server allow me to play UO for free?

Is it supposed to be this hard mining? I've got a skill of 16.6, but it's not going up anymore, and I'm barely getting anything from the ores I do occasionally get. Or maybe I'm in the wrong place(Britain. Should I relocate to Minoc?).

This shard is free. I dunno how the rest of UO works, but you simply download the UOClassic client(which is free, link is available on the IPY site), then download the IPY patch(on the site), run client.exe, enter an account name/password(this creates the account as well) on the login screen, and select the IPY shard from the list.

I got the game and am trying it. Skill gain seems a bit too slow on blacksmithing... I spent a few hours mining up 500 ingots and used them all making cutlasses from 50 skill. I did not gain a single blacksmithing point, and the success rate was far lower than the displayed rate - they only sold for 4g each, but all total I only got 80g (20 cutlasses) out of 62 attempts. It's a good thing im making my own tools or I wouldn't even be able to afford shovels.

Mining is slow too, but at least its actually going up. I've gone from starting at 30 to 36.6.

Do vendors pay more for stuff if you're a member of the town? Maybe I should join a town...

So, anyways, are we putting a guild here or not?

Sheesh, I'm running on some kind of terribad luck spree here.

I'm making my own shovels for minine. 27.4% chance of making them supposedly. I just had my shovel break after mining 180 ingots, I started attempting to make another one. 132 ingots later (34 tries) I finally made one. I did not get a single tinkering skill gain.

The only skill going up is mining. I burn an ever increasing number of ingots on both tinkering and smithing and haven't gained a single fraction of a point. I've went through at least a thousand ingots here, if not more.

Well I'm saving gold and plan to buy a house and guild in about a week.
If other people are sticking around and want to try and get something quicker I'm fine with putting some gold towards it.

Right now I end up playing pretty late at night however so dunno how reliable I am for grouping.

Seems like theres some kind of barrier at 50 skill... after making 200 lockpicks I finally got tinkering up 0.1, and after that making a few shovels and crap got it up to 50.5 really quick. Hopefully my smithing will eventually go beyond 50...

I'm hoping to eventually get to the point of being able to make equipment for people.

Is there any special trick to making ingots? I keep smelting the ores, but it's giving me nothing. Might as well go farm cows for hides, and turn the leather into caps(2GP a piece).

Also, where's the Britan moongate?

It's just random, chance gets better with higher mining skill. I still lose most of my ore at 42.4. Smelting it in stacks of 4 or 8 might help, or at least give you more chances to smelt without losing most of it on one bad try.

It is going to be a huge amount of work for one person to max any crafting skill.
If one person could easily do it then within a week there would be dozens upon dozens of GM crafters, no one would make any money. Every one would have a mule. I think they kind of want to avoid having the crafter overload that happens where every one crafts and no one does any overland or dungeon encounters.

And yeah for ore at low skill level try to smelt it in smaller piles until your skill raises high enough to avoid burning all of the material.

I started with 50 mining and never failed at anything "iron", smelting or forging. If you plan to make a miner/blacksmith, start with 50 in two main skills you want.

How do I make money? Nobody will buy stuff I have, and it keeps calling me a criminal whenever I skin a giant rat nobody else thought to. Killing them myself is tough, since they keep ganging up on me, and for some reason it's rubberbanding me on the spot sometimes(bad when trying to run away).
Most early money comes from crafting and escort missions. Escort missions are easy to get you your first a few thousands (it's usually 250-400 gold per mission). Some NPC at specific places (taverns, camps, inns) allow you to escort them to another town. If you know how to use moongates, it's 250-400 gold in a few minutes.

I am pretty sure that at 50+ BS you need to forge better ore than iron. Iron is for below 50 smithing.

Yes, quite noticeable. Also you should be a town member to call guards (I think).

I don't know what game you're playing, but iron is all there is on this shard.

Apparently my char was bugged or something. After using probably well over 2k ingots and not gaining a single point I petitioned a GM, and they said they reset some things and to try again. I go and burn 100 ingots and go from 50.0 to 50.4 in a few seconds.

They're adjusting skill gain based on feedback and tracking, stat gain (str / dex / int) might also be getting a boost.

And one more thing you don't get any extra money when you sell stuff as a citizen but you do get a very nice discount on buying goods from NPCs.

Has any one been into the dungeons or instanced dungeons yet? I haven't actually seen one of the random moongates appear yet to enter one of the instances.
