Only that I havent gained any dex at all after getting hiding to 40 (which took like 8 hours, I left the computer on all night hiding), fencing to 35 now (which took about 3 hours I think) and music to 40 (which I raised during the time I got hiding up, so about 8 hours). If I was getting 1 stat point an hour I'd be quite happy. As is I'm getting absolutely nothing.

I've been getting some decent stat points from fighting noob monsters. I really don't like the idea of a timer though; a small bonus each day is OK but any penalty compared to that is bad news.

Between looking over this and looking over UO skills in particular I'm kind of at a loss. I mean I know what most of the skills do in default UO but I'm lost as to what I actually want to do... Chances are Inscription and imagery will be something I Want on my character, but any advice on skills to start with at generation? Also, any clue if there are treasure maps in this shard? If so I might consider raising cartography and lockpicking so I can loot chests.

Well, keep in mind that there are no riding, so pvp is going to be a bit different. I go for macefighting+magery.

Treasure maps are in as well as MIBs.

As far as I know Inscription will not provide a magery dmg boost either (if that's what you were going for).

Dunno about starting skills...really depends on how long you plan on playing. I started my main character with fletching / carpentry in order to easily make money. I've got about 5k in the bank right now and once I get a house / guild stone I'll probably be dumping those skills and focusing on raising my combat skills.

Mostly thinking about inscription because I've played around with that a bit over the years and like the way it works, though it probably would be better for me to go for something a bit simpler. I probably should just start with crafting skills, make some money, and then work on other things. I just have a really hard time deciding. Truth be told, if the shard is quality I could spend months playing it. All depends on the community interactions though..

Edit: Thanks for the input Deon. I'm actually considering something like that. Though I wonder if going archery/Fletcher to start with and picking up lumberjack and carp(if needed) would be effective. Can you actually kill with Archery? And even if so, how does it compare to the melee skills in actual usefullness? I can't really rely on a combat skill if it'll require having other players with me, since I can't guarantee I'll be with other players all the time. But if Archery'll actually be useful for killing stuff, then archery/Fletcher would be a definite pick for me starting out I suspect.

Also woo for the treasure maps, but what is a MIBs? I'm sure I'll facepalm once it's de-acronymed :(

Like if you lock yourself into a side passage of a dungeon where monsters don't spawn or come by, and macro, you will gain Hiding or Tailoring faster?

Pretty sure it's only combat skills you'll gain in dungeons. If you want ot level up tailoring check for a crafting square in the city, I heard each city has one that gives you a 200% boost to crafting gains.

It sort of feels like they had too many "good ideas." What I liked about UO (and I played/dev'd only on free shards) was "here's the world, here's the interface, gogogo." Shards that had a bunch of races that all just had stat/skill modifiers, or classes in general, just felt dumpy. I get that they're trying to make people craft in town and fight in dungeons, but making people do anything seems contrary to what made UO cool.

After some deliberation I decided I'm going to start out working on an archery character, thank you for your help everyone :)

I'll be in game as Denzi. Doubt there is any real way to talk without being beside eachother though. I'll also be in the IRC randomly as Denzi as well :P

I'll be up for whatever

You can talk across the world if you're in a party. And I think you can invite people wherever they are too.

I started a warrior character. I'm doing some tailoring (don't know where to mine) and I'm about at the point where I'm wondering whether I should start a custom class character now or keep using this one. Opinions?

(don't know where to mine)
Rocky ground(single tiles of grey, easily noticed from the grass), or the side of any mountain. Ores can be depleted(I think they eventually regenerate), so if it says "There is no metal to mine here" find a different rock, or pick a different spot on the mountain. If your mining skill is really low, pay to train it, or you'll never get any metal.

I've made a character now as well. Is there a guild or anything yet? Or an IRC channel for just those of us from Bay 12?

Edit: My gods that is a lot of players. It's like being on an OSI shard.

Edit #2: Tried it for a while, concluded that it isn't for me.

There is an IPY IRC channel you can join and then from there create your own private room:

IRC channel: irc.gamesurge.net #ipy

I've been creating a room called #uristonline that a few of us were chatting in today and organizing things.
