[38b] Kitten thrown in magma lives
« on: April 06, 2008, 02:21:00 am »

I'm still using 38b, but I didn't see any major update since then.  This may be related to bug# 788 & 829.

Received a kitten birth message and promptly made my water resevoir a pit and designated the kitten to be tossed in.  I did this several times, but it kept climbing out.

I then changed the pit to be over an exposed magma channel and tossed it in there.  It just stood there - its still there now (I guess this is proof cats ARE some sort of demon...).

I threw in two other kittens (without having tossed them in water first) and they properly burned up.

The channel is used for tossing in poorly made furniture, and nothing has survived but that damned kitten.  Its just sitting in the channel looking all innocent.  I've even thrown some rock furniture on top of it to mash it down, but the furniture melts and the kitten stays.

Have save - I have all saves from start of fortress - will have to see if I can reproduce it in an earlier save.
Tempeture is on.
See this post as well.
He burned up upon save/restart DF.
Toady, let me know if the saves will even help.

This is jesus kittens second coming. He is here to stop you from murdering his kin. Trade off all cats to the elves and you and your people shall live.

EDIT: Should've read more carefully, never mind.

Yes, Calvacade, he linked the same thread in his initial post.

Sounds to me like the kitten got coated in water and has now essentially transformed into an obsidian turtle.

Just to be safe...
Lets throw more kittens in the magma hellhole. If any more seem to become Kung-Fu Action Jesus, then seal up the hole, flood the fort with magma, and run as far away as you can.

And pray no other settlers stumble upon this trapped fiend.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Did the cat actually move? If so, this could be a fun way to  fight lava critters on their home turf. Dip your would-be heroes in water and dispatch them into the pipe.

No, he didn't move, just stayed on the square he was thrown in at. What amazed me was that he kept climbing out of the pond in the first place - I thought he'd need a ramp or something.

Do you have a save before the kitten is tossed in, and if so does it reproduce?  A post-drop save won't help, since I need to figure out why it's not initiating the proper procedure.

I'll check the saves when I get home - I have them at each season, so I'll start up the season before and see if it reproduces.  Where do I send the save?

I'll need the region folder in some kind of zip/rar/7z, and any new objects that were added to the raw folder.  If it's less than 20 megs, you can send it to toadyone@bay12games.com.  You can also try The Dwarf Fortress File Depot which has a special section for bugged saves.

Just an update on this, I was not able to reproduce the effect.  As soon as I load up a save when the kitty was in the magma, it burns up instantly.  All saves before he was tossed in will properly burn him up when thrown in.

I have two saves with the kitty in the magma (he was thrown in near the end of Autumn 1053 and stayed there at least through Spring of 1054).  Both the Winter 1053 and Spring 1054 saves start with the kitty in the magma.

I'll keep my eye on this and will try to save right before any new toss-ins.

Did you throw the kitty in the water before you threw it in the magma when you went through your testing?
