7 can actually run as well or better than XP in some situations, as far as I've heard. On the other hand, 1GB of RAM isn't much, and... for that matter, why'd you get a netbook with Windows 7 Starter in the first place? That's barely even functional. That's the sort of thing you get if you plan on replacing it with Linux.

If you feel like it, you should be able to fork over 80 bucks or something for Windows 7 Home Premium, rather than waste an XP license.

What are the specs on that thing, anyway?

atom n550 dual core 1.5GHz, 250gb HD, 1gb Ram and Nvidia Ion2. Most netbooks are coming with Windows 7 starter as standard now and i can't find one with pre-installed XP anymore without it being used at some point. the netbook was like 400 bucks so i took it.

To be honest, I consider 400 bucks a pretty decent chunk of money for something with such a gimped OS.

One other problem here is that Windows 7 Starter is only available in a 32-bit edition. Of course, if you venture away from Windows 7 or towards a 64-bit OS, I wouldn't be surprised if you wind up having trouble finding drivers, because notebook manufacturers are, well, dicks.

it can't go x64, im only limited to 2gb so it would be a waste.

Why would it be a waste? I'm pretty sure there are other benefits, at least when you're running 64-bit software. Doesn't x64 have more (and wider) registers available, for instance?

which allows the programs to use DOUBLE the memory.

My point is that being able to address more memory is not the only benefit. You can still see a benefit to a 64-bit OS even if you have only 2GB of RAM. You won't get quite as much out of it, but there is still an advantage.

meh, i'll wait till the market pulls out more stuff in the future, currently AMD's APU chips are looking damn good but i want the prices to go down first. I really don't want to stick someone with a OS that gives them hell all the time, i got spare licenses all over my house just need to make sure it would be worth it (i got up to 7 Pro).

I'm not sure why you're talking about buying chips at the moment; pretty much all modern CPUs are 64-bit, including the one in your computer. I was never suggesting upgrading anything's hardware, nor would I suggest even attempting to replace the CPU in a netbook to begin with.

Oh, somehow I missed this:

which allows the programs to use DOUBLE the memory.

264 is a whole lot more than double 232. It's doubling it thirty-two times. Something like 4,294,967,296 vs. 18,446,744,073,709,551,616. Of course, how much memory you can address is slightly more complicated than that, but you get the picture.

Alright new question, my father is getting pissed that any links he uses redirects him to some ad crap even to malware sites which infects the computer. im getting tired of the redirects too so its effecting the network, would the DNS server qwest is using could be the problem (my father's computer had been cleaned out twice by his IT friend, im still lucky)?

If you're wondering if the DNS server is the issue, then use another DNS server. Come on, we've already gone over that. :P

However, I doubt that's the issue. If it's happening to more than one computer on the network, I'm honestly not sure what would have happened unless some sort of malware propagated through your network.

Just to clarify, you're getting redirected to other sites even if you try to, say, get there through a browser address bar? What browser are you using?

Also, this should go without saying, but run whatever antivirus/antimalware program you're using and see if that catches anything.

im just checking, my computer knowledge stops at my gateway, anything beyond that and im brain dead.

alright the situation is me and my father uses Internet explorer and Chrome (firefox sucks), now if we type out the web address we're good, the problem arrives on him when he goes on msn.com for his email, if he clicks any links he has a random chance of being redirected. for both of us, if we try to use google it redirects us and it takes many refreshes to get to the search result.
we checked his computer and he had a proxy setup on his browser so we cleared it (mine wasn't) but we are still being redirected from time to time. i already checked the computers and they are still not infected (well his was, not my laptop).
