You find the ape-dog-things about where you expected them. They once again focus on your shakiest unit, the first spearmen, but this time fail to rout them before being demolished by the other two. Then, further south along the coast, you encounter another an even larger and fiercer pack of the blasted things. They fare no better than the last.
You leave literacy at the top of your research queue even though it's already complete, but no harm is done; 0 RP go into literacy and the rest goes into the other techs.
You try to build a farm on tile 17, for the third time. You fail. You try to build a second hunting camp on tile 4, too, which fails less dramatically when one is built next door in tile 12 instead. Construction of the mine goes fine, though.

The humans are pleased to see the Nedici again, and greet them warmly. After exchanging pleasantries and ritual gifts, they begin to talk about trade. They are impressed by the wool clothing the explorers wear, and are interested in acquiring wool for warmth on the cold desert nights. While they cannot obtain exotic hides in large enough quantities to significantly impact Xeniice, they have common leather in abundance. (You may trade one wool for one leather a turn.) The explorers stop at the hills where the copper nuggets were found and collect samples of any unusual-looking mineral they can find.
Back in town, the new dockyard in the harbor launches the first real ship Xeniice has ever seen. It's only a fishing boat, and not much bigger than the canoes it will no doubt replace, but it's a sure sign of great things to come on the ocean. things are progressing nicely on the land, as well, as new farming techniques are perfected.

As the last cinders die, the people of Sidamaru have made their decision. While the world may no longer be the peaceful place they once thought it was, to turn their backs on it was suicidal. Instead, if the creatures of the world chose to try to break the goblins, they would break their attackers first.... As such, Chief Lius takes the hunter militia out into the plains to try to track their foes down for some much wanted vengeance upon their homes, once they have the power to do such.

Meanwhile, the shamans have came to their own decision.... while the old system of elder and apprentice worked fine when the only thing to fear was an accident, in light of the more hostile things about in the world, it may be better to be a bit more organized. They have started organizing themselves in circles, each which concern themselves with a different area. Each circle then chooses one member to voice their views on the circle which governs and coordinates all efforts in an area, and so on until you reach the high circle, a grouping of the seven wisest shamans in Sidamaru.

Kulth : The tribal historian, who knows the lore of times past. Old and wizened, he wishes all these younguns would stop bothering him so much. Having outlived one chief, he now finds having his granddaughter in the big hat kinda weird.

  Queen Vaea is rather shocked by the lightning pace of construction, and finds herself ordering a large-scale jeweler's workshop, despite having no apparent large-scale source of materials. Extensive quarrying is hoped to remedy that situation, and research is done into more proper mining.
  Vaeladin's reaction is somewhat different- while he's fully aware that the city is running out of things to build, he can't help but cackle with glee at the astounding progress they've managed, and continues to plot greatness for his city.
  Talon's activities return to normal; with the beasts disposed of, his archers are free to explore around the city more evenly. Though many are apprehensive about the cost, a second unit of Talons are raised to aid in whatever the military finds itself in, and the Stalwarts enjoy some well-deserved rest.

The First Duchess decreed that the city should focus on building the Nedici military galleys, as well as using the new techniques to improve farming, rather then build a fishing fleet. This last choice was largely due to the first fishing ship sinking only two weeks after its construction, demoralizing the fishermen. The Nedici were convinced that they would do better on subsequent ships, and so the Great One was willing to provide the resources for them to perfect the art of shipbuilding.

The bards, pleased with their successes improving farming tools, now sought to devise methods of extracting those strange hard rocks from the ground. With a little luck, they'd hoped be able to keep tunnels dug in search of more ore from collapsing.

A resource suitable for jewelry-making has been found, although not in the quarries as Vaea had hoped. A very strange rock formation is found east of the city atop a high cliff. When the wind blows through it, pale blue diamonds somehow form within the crags. This is obviously a magical process, and there's a great deal of speculation about whether the diamonds are themselves magical, but there's no doubt that they are shiny.
Meanwhile, the rest of the city's construction goes well, and the city's marketplace is bursting at the seams. The new unit of Talons is ready for action, and exploration is uneventful.

The Nedici explorers, far west of the city, spot a group of what look like dark-skinned elves on the shore. The elves immediately start firing arrows at the canoes. Mlaine, not wanting to make a landing under fire, and reasoning that the galley being built could come back later carrying more men on board, simply has his men row out of range and leave.
The galley, meanwhile, launches (with a healthy coating of waterproof tar and a simple bilge pump), and the farms south of the city are improved greatly. More excitingly, the secrets of bronze have been unlocked, and a few (mostly ceremonial) items are made with the small amount of copper brought back. It's generally conceded, however, that to make really practical use of the alloy, a real copper mine will be needed. This of course means that a town will be needed to support the workers, which will require soldiers to protect them, and a representative of the crown to oversee them, and so on and so forth. It's a thorny problem.
(I normally wouldn't let you upgrade archers into a galley, but it didn't occur to me to say anything last turn, so I'll let it slide this time. I also decided that galleys should give a health boost. Also, you don't need to eat anything from the granary to get 13 prosperity from food.)

The years had rolled by, and in retrospect, it almost seemed that it had been only a few weeks ago that the city had immesurably smaller. The Head Librarian estimated that the fifteenth thousand Hinor to live in Ljus Faller would be born by the end of the year. Fifteen thousand. A hundred and fifty years ago they had just been a small tribe, 100 people hiding from the darkness, and they died and ran, and soon a hundred had become a thousand, then two, and they finally reached the second sun. As they hid from the shadow, they grew more, slowly at first then more rapidly. In the past 13 years the city had grown fast. Insanely fast, faster then they had thought possible.
The shaman's state hadn't changed, for the past fifteen years he had been in a vision trance. He said that he might be gone for a while, and when the weeks stretched into months, the council of 12 had lost hope of him returning anytime soon. His sole protege had died the year before the shaman had entered the trance, and no one had the Lore to bring the shaman back. But they knew he would be back eventually, his Lore was strong, and it was said that he was there at the birthing of the Hinor race. He had lived so long that even he didn't remember if it was true. Whatever the case, he was old. So old that his age permeated his very being, after a regeneration he looked exactly the same, as if he was a hundred years old, and as if he would blow away with a puff of wind. His Lore had aged with him, and much of its power was gone, but the part that remained was still potent and powerful.

  A wondrous idea begins sweeping the city. Inspired by Sunstone's excess workers, Vaeladin's grand planning, and everyone's pride and avarice, orders are given to begin work on a truly massive wall, intended to surround the entire city. Though such a grand achievement would give unparalleled protection to military units defending the city, much of the intent is to turn the entire area into Sunstone's personal garden. If anyone thinks such an idea overambitious or presumptuous, they are rather quiet about it.
  With physical labor proving somewhat superfluous, the city also turns its attention to more literary pursuits, and work continues on more mundane, food-producing matters.

Duchess' Throne Room
The Duchess meets with General Mlaine, as well as a representative from each major family, to discuss the scouting incident.

Nedici: "The dark giants tried to kill our explorers. We cannot ignore this insult against us, against Xeniice, against The Great One."

Azuri: "I divined a response from the spirits earlier, of course. It would be a mistake to fight them at this time."

Kalron: "Are you mad? This is the perfect time to, to strike. They wouldn't expect an attack so soon, and we could destroy them utterly for daring to attack Xeniice."

Azuri: with a glare "I repeat that this is not what the spirits want. We could have revenge later, or possibly make them useful by not attacking at all."

Oro: "No. We cannot allow this insult to go unpunished. Xeniice is mighty, and we must show them this."

Mlaine: "I would prefer to wait. This 'bronze' looks to be able to create highly promising weapons if we can get more of it."

Lozanth: "I also support attacking now."

Arlenth: "We should not leave Xeniice defenceless. The legends speak of drakes from the east, and, if the spirits truely do not want us getting revenge, it might amuse them to bring the drakes back as punishment. Arlenth will, of course, give The Great One their full support by making more weapons."

Mlaine: "He may be right. Furthermore, this is the second settlement we've found outside Xeniice. There may be others. I was speaking with a bard last year who had designed some impressive stone walls to completely surround the city. If we were to build them, Xeniice would be completely invincible, even with most of our forces outside the city."

Quara: "Very well, you have spoken. We shall strike them down for their insult, before they grow stronger. We shall continue expanding our navy. We shall build this wall."

The Kalron were greatly pleased by the army leaving the city, however temporarily. A nighttime raid on the granary to steal food would now be possible, if a bit risky. Nobody would even notice the missing grain, if they were careful about what they took. They were even more pleased by being given a role helping to build the new galley. If their inexperienced shipwrights made a few key mistakes ... who would blame them?

The bards are split. Half of them continue heated discussions over exactly how to ensure that the new colony stays well supplied and completely loyal to Xeniice, and how to keep the troops stationed there loyal to Xeniice. The other half seeks to learn from the Dark Times. A separate colony is likely to be unproductive if divided up into small parts of families, (nevermind that they'll need their own elders, and some people are already breaking off from their families. Who's to say that the colonists won't break ties?) while just one family would be constantly trying to break control from The Great One. All this can be extrapolated from the past - so how can we keep the colony under control? Furthermore, what lessons will we be able to learn from the upcoming battle? What else can we learn from the Dark Times?

Nedici - The third most powerful family in Xeniice is also the most willing to adapt quickly to new situations. They seek to improve their prestiege and wealth in Xeniice from beyond its metaphorical walls. Allied with ~5% of the minor families. Neutrality sought with: All.

Kalron - This family is willing to use any underhanded tactic or strategy to succeed. They seek to improve their power primarily by subtly weakening Oro and Lozanth. Allied with: Azuri, Arlenth, ~10% of the minor families. Dislikes: Quara, Lozanth, Oro, and Nedici.

Azuri - This family is the most in tune with the spirits. They seek to improve their power primarily by winning more minor families to their side. Allied with: Kalron, Arlenth, ~25% of the minor families. Wary of: Nedici. Dislikes: Quara, Oro, Lozanth.

Arlenth - This family is the most tradionalist. They seek to improve their power primarily by proving themselves as more "worthy" then other families. Allied with: Kalron, Azuri, ~5% of the minor families. Dislikes: Quara, Oro, Lozanth, Nedici.

Neutral minor families - The remaining 30% of minor families choose not to align themselves with any major families. Their viewpoints are quite varied.

Free Citizens - Between 1% and 2% of the population has renounced their family ties, and are not bards. They have formed a loose association.

Bards - They are the intellectual faction of Xeniice, such as it is. They have no family affiliations. Allied with: Quara.

General Mlaine, of Lozanth - A gnome dedicated towards improving his family's well-being. He was born halfway through the Dark Time. Towards its end, he had gathered a small gang of Lozanth youth around himself, and conducted surprisingly effective raids against other families. Recognizing his potential as a leader, Quara the Great assigned him to a position over the Nedici Explorers, to ensure they stayed in line.
