Xeniice, turn 5:

The return of the scouts brought three days of feasting. Despite finding nothing particularly valuable, they helped show many people that a standing "army" was indeed possible. Some continued to see this as a waste - Xeniice is the only city. What could possibly be worth dedicating people to exploring? Others saw it as a chance for great prestige. Surely there was something worth finding, which would bring great fame to the family who sponsored the explorers. Still more saw it as a chance to bring "wealth" from the world into the city (or at least more stories from foreign tribes, their people, and their tools). Not one gnome realized the true implications of cities having trained combat troops.

Naturally, the Oro attempted to leech favor from the explorers' success, and announced that the troops would be staying in Xeniice. Most elders were ambivalent towards their troops, seeing the attempt for what it was, and happy enough to see the relatively small family dedicate its resources towards feeding people who did no real work. A small band of people wasn't worth concern, despite being armed.

The influx of tribal settlers was continually getting slower, as very few nomadic tribes of gnomes remained in the area. Overhunting had depleted game to the point where such a life was barely survivable. Their tribal trading partners nearly gone, the gnomes of Xeniice began to run low on skins. Not every gnome had a tent to sleep in at night, and they began to complain to their family heads. A solution to the housing problem was sought. Wood was considered, and a woodcutters' camp was built to facilitate lumber harvesting. One unnoteworthy family living in the hills attempted to dig holes into the sides of a hill for temporary quarters. They hit stone. They saw no way to extract it, but decided that, since it was hard, they might be able to build from it if somebody could figure out how. They brought it up with the council.

The Nedici family, formed from several tribes that had settled last summer, began to get their own ideas from the fishing boats. With the help of Arlenth and Azuri, they began building a small fleet of canoes. They hoped to be able to explore the river in a more timely fashion then Lozanth would be able to, knowing that boats were faster then walking. Duarg agreed to explore in a different direction.

As Xeniice was now sprawled out across the river, towards the western plains, there were families living close enough to attentively farm the western plains. Some fished occasionally for a bit of variety, but none focused on it until the resources could be diverted towards a sufficient number of dedicated fishing boats.

Governor Galthor - Patriarch of the Arlenth family. He has earned the respect of many other family heads, and acts as a sort of spokesman for the council, (usually) keeping the family heads from conflicting such that one family or the other leaves Xeniice. Some complain about his apparently greater power, but most agree that his compromises are mutually beneficial. He believes that greater benefit will come to families that work together then will come to families who insist on behaving greedily.

Duaro - New patriarch of the Lozanth family. He is innovative, and cares little for tradition. Despite his frequent, purposeful social Faux Pas('s? es?), enough of his family liked him to choose him as Mjolar's successor.

Ilasi - Matriarch of the Kalron family. She is quite arrogant, and encourages her family towards wasteful decadence.

Raalth - Matriarch of the Azuri family. She is kind, and highly spiritual.

Boranth - Patriarch of the Oro family. He is greedy, and seeks to improve both his and his family's position by any means. Boranth is a fairly small family.

As the night set down upon Sidamaru, an omen was seen. A falling star burned through the sky and pointed towards the Northwest. After consulting the shamans, chief Naith ordered the Shieldguard to go up river to see if they could find what the spirits were trying to show them. With the absence of the shieldguard, some of the townsfolk has piled great rows of stone taken from the mountains and hills to surround the town. Meanwhile, Lius talks Kulth into letting her go with the shieldguard, as she has spent more time outside the village then anyone else.

Kulth : The tribal historian, who knows the lore of times past. Old an wizened, he wishes all these younguns would stop bothering him so much.
Tiorv : The Chief of all Shamans, what she doesn't know about the tribesfolk could barely fill a drop of rain. Rumors that she uses this to blackmail people are completely false. Really.

The past two years had been terrible for the colony, Feta's explorers had been decimated in a series of battles with insane ape-men. Preperations were underway to make the millitary force better trained and well equipped, with a workshop being built so that spears would be easier to produce.
But good things had happened too, Lucien and his men at the hall of learning had discovered many things, he had taught the Hinor how to give life to plants, and how to make the animals bend to the will of the Hinor. And he had figured out new ways of making things, turning the animals very hair into garments and ways to make spears in half the time.

Having figured out proper methods of building from stone, one problem is solved. Another remains unsolved: Extracting the stone using their poor tools. It can be done, of course, but slowly, and the tools frequently break. Many of the families now bicker amongst themselves over who's methods of creating tools are better. Galthor has been steadily weakening as of late, and is finding himself without the strength needed to stop the infighting. Fortunately, it has as yet been restricted to verbal arguments. Boranth claims that its because of the Oro men, who he had ordered to break the arguments up. Some of the elders have begun viewing Oro in a more favorable light.

The Nedici continue to build their canoes, and have begun training men as explorers. The Lozanth continue to formally explore the lands surrounding the city, despite public support starting to wane slightly.

Exploring north of the city, Feta and his men cross hills and a small mountain range, finding more hills on the other side. It is in this region they come across a small, nomadic tribe of dwarves, living in the foothills. The Hinor explorers are understandably rather jumpy, but the dwarves aren't particularly hostile, and pleasantries of a sort are exchanged. The lack of a common language makes things difficult, but they don't appear to have or know anything particularly interesting.
Things in the city go nicely, as well. The new workshops are completed and ready for use, and the city's researchers work out ways to better travel and move supplies through the wilderness.

The exploring spearmen encounter a pack of odd bear-like creatures with the heads of predatory birds and feathers along their shoulders and forelegs. They are few in number, but quite ferocious, and the ensuing battle ends in stalemate as the Ashara and the beasts rout simultaneously. Little exploration is accomplished.
Back in town, things go as planned. The granary and workshop are built on schedule, and the population continues to grow.

Xeniice comes under attack in late summer one year, when a pack of migratory beasts happens upon the city. Predatory, winged lizards, about twice the length of a gnome, they swoop down on the city and attack the populace. Fortunately, while Lozanth's scouts are out of town at the time, the Oro spears and newly trained Nedici explorers are on hand to defend the city. The beasts' flight makes them difficult to attack, but the defenders nevertheless manage to draw them away from the civilians, kill several, and drive off the rest. The Lozanth scouts, who return later having found little more than rolling grasslands, are somewhat upset to have missed the affair.
The years pass with no other major incidents. Fierce competition has noticeably raised the overall quality of craftsmanship in Xeniice, for which everyone claims credit, and assorted squabbling continues.

Xeniice, turn 7:

Galthor lies dead. His successor, Unthan, is less respected, and thus less capable of keeping the other elders organized. Fortunately, the Oro Spears now take their jobs seriously. They patrol the various family areas in small bands, diligently on guard against threats external or internal. An uneasy peace exists between the families, at least for now.

Tents are slowly being replaced by wood or stone houses. A dedicated quarry is constructed to deal with stone demand, using the now-quality tools.

The power of Lozanth dwindles, and they are now but a minor family. Still they send their scouts out, hoping to find something that will change their fortunes. The Oro grow stronger following their role in saving the city, as minor families ally with them. The Nedici Explorers are sent up river, looking for any tribes in the area - They carry gifts of food, and hope to lure any tribes to the city, to merge with the Nedici.

As a new generation grows, more food is needed. With Raalth dead and the flood barely a story, farmland is reclaimed. A small fleet of fishing canoes is also built, along with a primitive precursor to a dock.

This section is mostly notes to myself, so I don't have to keep looking back at my fluff from previous turns.

Governor Galthor - Patriarch of the Arlenth family. He has earned the respect of many other family heads, and acts as a sort of spokesman for the council, (usually) keeping the family heads from conflicting such that one family or the other leaves Xeniice. Some complain about his apparently greater power, but most agree that his compromises are mutually beneficial. He believes that greater benefit will come to families that work together then will come to families who insist on behaving greedily.

Governor Unthan - Galthor's replacement.

Duaro - New patriarch of the Lozanth family. He is innovative, and cares little for tradition. Despite his frequent, purposeful social Faux Pas('s? es?), enough of his family liked him to choose him as Mjolar's successor.

Ilasi - Matriarch of the Kalron family. She is quite arrogant, and encourages her family towards wasteful decadence.

Raalth - Matriarch of the Azuri family. She is kind, and highly spiritual.

Boranth - Patriarch of the Oro family. He is greedy, and seeks to improve both his and his family's position by any means. Boranth is a fairly small family.

Lucien:A ex-hunter, his leg got infected, and he had to have it amputated the year after a regeneration, so he had to wait another 9 years until he would be able to regenerate again and get it back. Currently walks around with a pirate-esk peg leg. Current head of the hall of learning.

Council of 12/Village Elders: The council of 12 is composed of the 11 oldest people who have had at least 30 years since their last regeneration, and one honarary member who has to have had at least 30 years since his last regeneration, but doesn't have to be as old.
