The bireme, exploring the open ocean, is set upon by some sort of tentacled sea monster. The sailors' bows can barely damage it even when it surfaces, and the ship is quickly shattered, and sinks to the bottom of the sea.
Vlorinth's arm, in the same general area, covers a huge amount of ground (so to speak) and has a very eventful time. It almont immediately discovers a massive atoll island just north of Blessed Coast. It's close enough to the shore that even a canoe could reach it if the men on board knew it was there. Then, it is wracked by a heavy storm, and finds another island, this one covered with a thick layer of ice. Finally, it encounters a huge nest of sea serpents north of the salamander-men's town. Due to some really absurdly bad luck (seriously, it was disgusting) the ship is heavily damaged and forced to flee. Fortunately, with the ship's incredible speed, withdrawing safely is easy.
You also settle Blessed Coast and raise some more settlers.
