Well, no leveling up and starting with top-notch equipment always helps. I'm pretty sure we're all able to take down a Spectre in 1v1.

Actually it'd be the no level up.

And spectres can kick your ass thouroughly, they'll get access to the HMW* X series.

Shepard became a Spectre pretty early. And on our team we have:
-Someone proficient in both snipers and shotguns, also while being a proficient techie.
-A krogan which has the combat ability of a soldier and tech abilities of a technician, except he can't wear heavy armor.
-A krogan who is BETTER at combat than the other krogan.
-A biotic which has assassination and road warrior.
-A tank buster techie who has cryo blast and an assault rifle, making him as effective against infantry as standard ME characters and even more effective against tanks.
-A biotic who we don't know a lot about yet, but has shotgun and melee proficiency while being a relatively pure biotic.

 I think this is one of those "everything is overpowered, therefore everything is balanced" games.

Yep  , And I haven't introduced Taric yet. or the ship and such.

I think the thing with Shepard is a case of Gameplay-Story segrigation, (s)he was a badass before we got our hands on him/her supposedly, better weapons and stuff just helped them be even more badass.
