+1 for Demon souls.    If its too easy, just play it again as it keeps getting harder each time you beat it.  :)

Not to mention its incredibly fun.

+1 spelunky.

But Spelunky doesn't sound exactly like what you want. After reading the Demon Souls wikipedia page, it sounds like it might not be either. I don't know, maybe give some games that you liked that fit what you want?

Would it be enough to impose special restrictions on yourself? Like doing a ghost run in Thief (take all treasure, don't injure or get spotted by any enemies). Most games don't have a method of imposing special restrictions from a menu at the beginning or something. Mostly a difficulty slider just affects enemy perceptions, numbers, health, and damage. It would be nice to see specific difficulty toggles like "half loot drops", "double food consumption", etc. A lot of roguelikes havefeatures in place that could be modified by difficulty toggles, but don't code them in. Sometimes you can pick a gimped character for extra difficulty.

There comes a time when you must take off the soft, furry slippers of a boy and put on the shoes of a man.
Unless of course they don't fit properly and your feet blister up like bubble wrap.
Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.
Especially if that fat pig Tony is at the desk.

The legend of Zelda, Twilight princess.

It's not difficult to play, but the puzzles are damn-hard.
With a guidebook.

There are also combat situations where the combat is impossible to figure out
(unless you have the best instincts, and/or the guidebook.)

plus incredibly long.(weeks of unique gameplay)

I love nethack, but the difficulty is incredibly high.

you need expertise, and a coherent strategy, and shit-ton of practice to get anywhere.

Then again, the RNG gods both Kill, and Giveth. Take it how you will.

Yeah, spelunky is actaully pretty hard. it's literally Nethack in platformer form.

Good stuff, and free to download.

Space-chem is entirely about an abstract (somewhat unrealistic) but great, view on chemistry.

Doesn't require any elaborate chemical knowledge.(though it might make the construction of say, polyelthelyne easier, logistically.)(yes, logistically)

If he asked for puzzles i'd say Schizm.

And if he asked for unfair / impossible.. Well.. this.. (Mushihimesama)
As an added bonus try to make a not-getting-hit-even-once run...

The only thing that this game misses is a message (after you defeat the boss) saying : Sorry, the princess is in another castle.

I can't believe nobody's mentioned Super Meat Boy yet. That game is like a reflex test for panthers.

It isn't that hard Stworca and unfortunately after seeing how it is done I am actually quite disapointed...

Basically there is a pattern and anyone who has been playing those games, also known as the Japanese, pretty much have that pattern down.

There are even programs on the net that teach you those patterns.

That reminds me. The original Super Mario Bros., if you have a Wii or an emulator. Still punishingly difficult, still insanely fun.

A blind Super Mario run? Jump.. invisible box.. die.. jump, avoid invisible box.. another invisible box, die.. Jump, avoid both, get impaled on third one that turned out to be a trap. Fun for sure.

You should at least give the demo for Lugaru a try. Taking weapons into combat is dangerous for everyone involved as disarming is common. Attacks can be countered and counters can be countered too. I recently reinstalled this and I'm having a blast.

Along loosely similar lines to Lugaru you might want to try out Super Punchout for the SNES.

A group of games that require mastery of the controls, fast reflexes, and good timing are those in the same vein as the first Prince of Persia game. I'd suggest you try out the first two Oddword games and Flashback for the SNES. I suggest those two because I know them best and they have some very difficult sections.

Edit to add: There are lots of platform games that I'd argue were fair but difficult. I'm pretty sure many consider them to have fake difficulty and multiple play throughs of some of the harder stages is almost certain so I didn't suggest them.
