Wtf is "Drainage"

That's the only thing I don't know the meaning of on the embark screen's find feature. Any help please?

It refers to how quickly water that enters the system in that region leaves it. It probably doesn't have much in-game effect, but high-drainage areas are far less likely to have aquifers than low-drainage areas. Drainage also affects what biomes are generated; swamps are low-drainage, forests medium, and grasslands high-drainage, for instance.

I've also seen suggestions that say that soil floors, in high-drainage areas, eat 1/7-depth water more quickly than in low-drainage areas. That would mean that raincatchers would be less efficient in high-drainage areas than low-drainage areas.

Edit: There's better information (which should still be accurate) about how drainage, rainfall, and elevation correspond to different biome types on the 40d Biome wiki article.

ya drainage rules still apply in 31. I've been using it to gen worlds with lots of shrublands and forests.

This information appears to be mostly (if not completely) accurate for 2010 as well, though I've not tested it to be sure. In particular, I set my bounds to generate lots of swamp/marsh/forest terrains, since I want lots of surface plants to make embark a little smoother.
