25 Timber (cont)
After the long process of assigning an addition burrow for the purposes of allowing the metalworking to continue (but to be separate from the 'inside' burrow incase an underground attack requires the forges to be isolated) I hit the alarm bells, pull the dining room lever and activate the two dwarf militia.

Goblins almost got to the main gate because the assigned lever puller got lazy. Thankfully the sacrifice of the sensor dogs distracted the goblins long enough for me to bash the sod over the head and to get him back into action. The adamantine process is taking far too long as we only have a few weapons of it currently, so I've ordered some iron to be smelted to at least get some quick basic armour done sometime this decade.

After killing another dog, the goblin leader stumbles into one of the volunteer-collectors, mwa ha ha ha!

Now they're just sitting outside, waiting around, I think because their leader is in a cage (as are a couple of others) that they are not going to leave, hmm, maybe external cage traps weren't such a good idea. I'm going to see if we can lure them elsewhere.

Pulling the lever and creating an easier path for them didn't seem to work, time to try putting the militia at a visible point at the battlements.

They're still just staying there and I'm very reluctant to send out our two troops to fight directly while they don't have full coverage with at least some sort of metal. This may take a while. Life in the fort though is largely continuing as normal, we didn't really need to go out much anyhow. I've just told the militia to grab some ranged weapons (after making some dog bone crossbows and wooden bolts) and to use the goblins for target practice.

Gah, lazy sods won't make any ammo for the crossbows. I'm going to cancel the alert so some will go out to bring in the cages, get scared and run back in, luring the goblins into the traps.

Success, the gobbos gave chase!
Crunch! Although the glass spike didn't seem to do much extra, maybe we need more spikes?
Another goblin went forth and got progressively more and more bruised and fractured and eventually lost grip of his whip. Time for the militia to get some live target melee training!

This is silly, you can tell who is doing the real work here. Plisskin is running back from having grabbed more gear and the recruit is being lazy again. The spiky ball traps mangled one goblin to death, 3 are in cages, one is crippled and trying to crawl away and the last just spotted a civilian and is running towards the traps.
Here you see the sixth goblin, now in mid-fall, and his crippled mate trying to crawl away. I give the crawler even money to escape from our lazy military.

About bloody time, finally one of the military strikes down a crippled goblin. Wardogs are mauling the other.

That injured final goblin got mauled a bit then was enraged so strangled one dog to death. Then the pack of dogs and a war lion attacked. He got mauled some more but injured the lion and tore up another dog so that it bled to death. Our military is back to laziness, realising that our waves of dogs will eventually do the job.
Not long after the goblin finally got munched enough to die. Time to reload the sensor units with some puppies.

Things have settled down again and the well system is ready to fill up. I have placed two levers to control the two floodgates here (the waterlock system was mostly to prevent any overpressure from drowning the dwarf who carved the fortification in the rock).
and here's the well level. The well itself is still under construction but should be done soon. The level on this floor connects to a floodgate to allow drainage via the fortification (where the yellow X is) and into a cavern.
The well setup is out of the way, but at least it is a safe source for medical water and any bucket brigades to fill ponds elsewhere (perhaps for dwarf baths for example).

The well got finished just before the year end. I think it was a fairly eventful and successful year, considering the limitations of 16 dwarves, and I hope that I've further built up the fort so future overdwarves can continue along nicely. The elf and human caravans have come but not the dwarf one. No dwarf migrants or even emissary arrived so this is a bit troubling, looks like it's procreation time to build up numbers! Anyhow, here's the status.
The next player now needs to pm to me their email address so I can send the save file onwards.
