Urist. The axe. Its right there. PICK IT UP!
« on: February 10, 2011, 10:44:11 pm »

So I had some trees. These trees needed felling. So I assigned some wood fellers and designated the trees to be felled.

I've done it a hundred times before.

Nothing.
I try new people.
Nothing.
I look to see who has axes. None of them do. They're all in bins.
I try -everything-. At one point some miners walk to the same bins and take the freaking picks -out- of the same bin my dwarves cant get axes from. this goes on for a few hours while I do other things, i just let the game sit. Not a single dwarf. I even went so far as to assign all of them to do utterly nothing -other- than fell trees, and so they all stood around with No Job.

Is there soemthing that like, changes once you have over a certain number of dwarves? Does the ways of gettign them to equip things become different? Halp! I've gotten everything else down, but this is making a weeks worth of work fort just stop functioning!

Did you assign the axes to any military dwarves?  If there are military dwarves anywhere who think those axes are theirs, your axecutters won't touch them.

Also, did you assign them to do axecutting with Dwarf Therapist or a similar memory hacking tool?  There were at some point some bugs assigning woodcutting or mining with Dwarf Therapist.

If all else fails, deconstruct your wagon, build a carpenter's shop (out of one of those very logs, if you want!), then give someone carpentry labor and build a training axe out of that.

Yes, it's a total hack that they can cut wood like that, but it works.

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Seriously though, more realistic than Minecraft in that sense. In MC you can mine stone with wood picks.
This also leaves the question in DF: where did the first pick or axe come from?

Armok made the First dwarf with a pick already in his hand.

Or instead of. I forget which.

I actually think it was a battle axe.

Fools. The official legend says that the first dwarf, Urist McUrist, was created with a pickaxe in one hand, a battleaxe in the other, a hammer held in his mouth, riding a wagon, with an anvil on his head.

But lo, Armok's first attempt at creating the world did not go so well, causing a fifty z-level cave-in, reducing the dwarf to paste.

And so Armok sighed and said: "I shouldn't have balanced all that stone on just one support hooked up to a lever."

I always embark with 1 wooden training axe instead of 2 copper battle axes, I think cutting down tress with battle axes is just as stupid and it saves me embark points so I can start with lizardmen and devourers.
