I can't do Scotland or anything because this will be my first game ever. Kaguro, that sounds exactly how I would play anyway.

You could edit the Descr_strat file to play as them  :P

Hell, when I got RTW, I wanted to play as Greece, so I just did a short campain and cheated to win to unlock everything. It's easier to do without accidently messing up your game than editting the Descr_strat file.

Rome and Medieval 2 are the best total wars. Empires just had something missing and annoying map.

My friend who has both said he thought it was because ETW had fewer units.

You could edit the Descr_strat file to play as them  :P

I'd rather not accidentally fuck up a brand new game. After this I'll beat the short campaign and then we can do another LP as whoever the hell we want.

It's looking like Venice, anything I should know specifically for them? (As I'm viewing this as a chance to get advice while playing, to reduce whatever learning curve there is.)

Venice has, arguably, the best Heavy Infantry in the game and is in a position to be a trade/money powerhouse. Get only a few fortresses to pump out units and leave all costal cities you can spare to be cities for income boost. Try not to have over 50k money for more than a single turn at anytime, when you do governers start picking up annoying traits.

Lots of ways to gain traits, good ones and bad. Corruption is just one of several trait lines that start once you have alot of money for a few turns at one time. Cowardice trait line is another bad one, generals can get it if they are in a battle but don't kill anyone themselves.

ALWAYS keep taxation at low, the growth bonus gives you ALOT of cash in the long run.

Driveing it up when your cities are at their highest level is a good thing though, as otherwise riots become far more likely. Also low taxation can also give bad traits to governers, ones that make them bad at handleing money specificly. Normal at the lowest for cities with governers, low for cities without them.

You sack the cities to teach them a lesson. And you get a good amount of cash :D But yes when the pop gets high enough you can raise the taxation to keep from over populating but in a short campagin with venice that wont probably be necesary.

This sounds exactly how this game should be played.
