Sounds like a plan. Milan is the most aggressive nation in M2TW and usually captures nearly the whole of Europe if the player doesn't stop them. I think you can kill the pope in a more traditional way (capturing rome) and if the new pope is yours they should like you.

Get an Assassin, keep 'offing popes until you get one that likes you. And once that one doesn't, time for another quick round of a killing spree .

Following the Milanese, and subsequent Venetian incursions, coupled with frequent excommunication and an invasion by Spain, France is in a truly uineviable position. It's previous capital and most of its' heartland is in the hands of foreigners.

Oh, and it has faced crusades too, just for good measure.

The only upside is that France has driven the Normans from Caen, but they came back to Bruges.

Paris and Toulouse sit in the hands of Venice, and all of it's holdings on the Bay of Biscay belong to Spain. What shall France do now?

Clearly, take beck Paris! Venice is overextended and Paris should fall before it can be reinforced.

The French destroyed the walls and were able to destroy the now undefended garrison. Then they exterminated the populace of their own ex-capital. WTF?

In retaliation, the Venetians moved against Mareilles, they destroyed a pitiful French force that was arrayed against them, but the Pope then ordered the fighting to stop, under threat of excommunication.
The French force stood no chance.

In the south the Spaniards decided that they would expand into the southern reaches of stricken France, unfortunately Venice was in their way. That posed little problem to Spain. They had eliminated the Portuguese, how hard could a bunch of fat merchants be?

Hungary has been driven from Zagreb again. They are pressed on one side by the Mongols, and by Venice on the other. It must strike, or die. Unfortunately Venice moves first, and with overwhelming forces.

Budapest fell quickly, and faced a devastating sack. However, they had rallied other forces and struck towards Zagreb in retaliation. The Venetians engaged them. They deployed a large force with a considerable force of cavalry.

However, Hungary too fielded an impressive force.

During the positioning for battle the Venetian cavalry outpaced the infantry, and this was to prove a grave error. The cavalry were not able to ravage the flank as they were supposed to, and once the infantry arrived they were destroyed, leaving the infantry on their own.

On the crazy French killing Parisions thing though it may be because the Parisions didn't form le resistance against Venice, or they never programmed some form of 'I don't want to kill people from my home town' thing for the AI.

Spoiler: The Continued Adventures of Various Italians in What Was Once France (click to show/hide)

'France' currently consists of five settlements, Rheims, Paris, Rennes, Caen, and Angers. It has lost all of Burgundy and the lands around Orleans and the Bay of Biscay. Toulouse, it's grand staging platform for southern campaigns, belongs to Venice. Marseilles is cut off from the rest of France and cannot hope to stand against the Venetians who surround it.

The Pope has tried to stop the bloodshed, but he can only hold the ambitious Venetians back for so long. Eventually he relents and allows the war to commence again, should the parties choose to. Venice has been pushing for this for quite some time, and sends an army against Marseilles ASAP. It brings with it the latest in siege weapons; the mighty mortar. Against sustained fire from the mortars even the Huge Walls of Marseilles are no match. Within one day the walls are breached and the mass of Venetians pours in. A few French archers stand against them, but what can lightly armoured foot do against heavy cavalry and their supporting infantry? The garrison is engaged and killed with little difficulty, and Marseilles is annexed.

Upon inspection it turns out that France has been using the merchants of Marseilles to fund its' armies, generating over 4000 florins per turn under a normal tax rate. It is soon lowered and the docks are ordered expanded.

Following the capture of Marseilles the untis are sent back to Toulouse for retraining. Before they are fully re-equipped the Pope orders the violence to end again. Soon France angers said Pope and is excommunicated, leading to Venice resuming its' campaign, pushing north to besiege Angers. In the process it engages a French army. The army is routed, however it inflicted some casulties. A relief force from Bern comes to make certain a full complement is ready for the battle for Angers. Soon the battle shall begin.

After several months the food stores in Angers begin to run low, France must act now or lose the fortress. In desperation they send a relieving force and launch a sortie. unfortunately France is poor and can only field cheap units, as well they have been weakened by defection by the more pious members of their armies. Battle is joined and the relieving force deploys on the top of a small rise. The Venetians drive forward, taking casulties from the cannons the French had. Primitive, but no less effective when they hit. The vastly inferior force takes heavy casualties and routs off at the first clash. The cavalry chase them down and take many prisoners. The army then rotates to engage the force sallying from the fortress. It was engaged and gave battle. The fighting was fierce, but as soon as the Venetian cavalry arrived the troops broke and ran. Leaving Venice clearly in control of the field.

Spoiler: Hungary Gets Shafted (click to show/hide)

Hungary also sits in a precarious position. To the Southwest sits the Kingdom of Venice, which has been at war with Hungary almost continually for 400 years. To the Northwest the powerful HRE stands, with its' vassal Poland. Yet, they are engaged in a war with the Mongols. The Mongols themselves sit to the north east, and have taken several Hungarian settlements. To the Southeast sits the eviscerated Byzantine Empire, and what remains of the Turks. However, they face even more barbaric warriors in the form of the Timurids.

Hungary holds Zagreb, but has lost its capital, Budapest. Venice strike at Zagreb with a newly formed army. Fortunately,(for Venice) Hungary has not rebuilt the wall they smashed taking it, much to their chagrin. The Venetians want Zagreb, and will not settle. They strike immediately and slaughter the garrison much like Marseilles (srsly, almost the same battle). It is occupied and a garrison is recruited from Venetian loyalists.

The consolidated army moves up to join with the army in Budapest. A few conscripts later (to add a little extra oomph) it moves to attack Bran. It also bears mortars, and the walls are once again blasted apart. The garrison is then fought in the streets and on the inner walls, inflicting heavy casualties, but they are slaughtered to a man.

To the best of Venetian intelligence Hungary only holds Sofia at the moment.

Spoiler: An Update on the Byzantine-Turk Wars (click to show/hide)

Thessalonica is the current capital of the Byzantine Empire following the loss of Constantinople to the Turks. AN army sallies forth to take it. Two battles later said army is besieging it, yet it's numbers are greatly reduced. Reinforcements are set out and it is intendedd that it will lift the siege and move on Constantinople, since it has rebelled and driven the Turks out, leaving them without a single settlement. (Timurids -1, Turks -0) With Constantinople captured (I fulfill a win condition) the Kingdom of Venice can use it as a shield to hold the Timurids out of Europe.

Spoiler: The New World (click to show/hide)

Scholars have determined that the world is round, and so sailing west will lead to the lucrative trade grounds of the east. Venice has built a fleet of new ships and sent as many troops as they can hold to sieze these lands for its own. The plan is to recruit priests from amongst the locals to foster better relations and bring the under the control of the Pope.

Woah... I think I covered everything. That was longer than my last science lab. Over an hour of typing. I hope it was worth it. Soon I shall run out of the alloted time, but I think I can continue anyway.
