« on: February 10, 2011, 01:25:18 pm »

Ok, so i have tried a few things and none of them seem to work, can someone please explain to me how to set up a silk farm with the GCS i captured?  it is not tame since i know that messes it up (this is the second one i caught)

Build cage on a platform, accessible via drawbridge over empty channel. Make sure that if bridge is raised there's no path off the platform. Surround platform with walls but leave one edge free. Across the channel, build a chain and tie up an animal. Raise the bridge (isolating the platform) and release the GCS. He will fire webs at the animal. Then all you need is another drawbridge to block his view of the animal and your dwarves can run in.

Something like that.

You only need to put it into a room it cannot get out of and put a raising bridge on one side. Lower the bridge after chaining up a bait animal as target outside.
Code: [Select]
WWWB
WxFB C
WWWB
W=wall
x=put spider here, either pit from above or release from cage with lever
F=fortifications
C=chain for animal
B=bridge raises <-

fakeedit:
Yeah pretty much that, I'd still like to know if fortifications work tho.

I'm not sure if webs can be shot through fortifications, if not then replace it with a channeled out tile.

There may be line of sight issues with the fortification, if it'll attempt to shoot through them at all. With the gap between bridge and animal there's no real difference, unless something tries to shoot at your spider.

In order for it to work efficiently, there must be a walkable path between the spider and its target. If there is no path, the spider will only shoot webs once every few minutes, whereas a valid path will cause it to spew webs every few seconds.

This is how I usually do it.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Why isn't the GCS pathing through the Passable doors to the north and south?

Those two doors are set to be passable to dwarves, but not to pets.  The GCS thinks it has a walkable path, so it shoots webs, but it can't actually get through the doors so it can't move.

So the GCS (1) considers itself a "pet" despite not being tamed, and (2) respects the dwarven "NO PETS" designation?  Amazing.  What a polite semi-megabeast.

Read the movie's description more closely: "This one is tame and is being baited by a goblin crossbow(wo)man."

What's the most efficient set-up to use with untamed GCSs?

(I didn't find out about the Dungeon Master issue until after I'd started my current fortress, and I'm too far into it to restart just to get rid of PET_EXOTIC tags.  I don't want to rely on the elves, if elves even bring underground creatures.)

No - in fact, the crossbowman is completely naked. All it does is walk back and forth and act as bait to induce the spider to shoot webs.

Try putting up a bridge between the spider and collection site. Raise the bridge to block sight.
Just make sure that the spider cannot go near the bridge, or it could get crushed.
