remove the circus from the game
« on: February 10, 2011, 09:03:40 am »

The only thing I ever read about breaching the circus, is that it causes people to abandon their fortresses because they die the FPS death.
Now, if a fortress would die because the clowns destroy everyone and everything, it would be acceptable, as part of the gameplay. However, FPS death has nothing to do with gameplay at all, and thus I wonder why the circus is still in the game in it's current form.
So. Either remove the circus altogether, or reinvent it in a whole different way, that does not kill FPS.

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

Doesn't it cause bad things when you turn it off, though?

If that's true, then I'm removing HFS from my next game, since I never like touching the blue stuff, anyway.  I always just left it there because I thought that removing the HFS would cause buggy things like an increased incedence of floating caverns that cave-in on embark or problems in worldgen where creatures or civilizations fail to be placed.

it's hardly better than steel... invaders never bring anything stronger than bronze or iron, and steel is heavier than addy and harder than every material the invaders bring, making it as useful as addy in most cases except the cases where it's actually more useful

Removing HFS causes Adamantine and demonic temples to not appear. Other then that I haven't noticed any problems.

Of course you could always set the number of demons to 'NONE' this makes hell basically a slade cavern level and dang fun to build a fort in  :D But I haven't seen any demonic temples in this one either. So I'm not sure if they're connected.

I have a theory that the reason why this happens is because Demons move crazy fast! It's like they have [SPEED:1] tag. This tag lags the computer when it's stuck on the dwarves it's probably doing the same thing. Don't know if it can be proven, but making demons go slower may remove the FPS problems.

FPS problems are from the dozens of demons trying to path to the dwarves every frame and not finding a path, and trying again next frame if you immediately seal the HFS off, I thought.

I've opened up the HFS, cleared out the initial wave, and gotten some of my FPS back before.

It just makes a major hit to your FPS because suddenly you have a large number of constantly repathing creatures taking up simulation time.

There is no circus in the game. Remove whatever weird mod you have installed if it's a problem.
