Concerning ponds and fish
« on: February 10, 2011, 12:11:08 am »

Mayor: "And here you see our gathering hall. Behold the--"
Liaison: "What's that smell?"
Mayor: "Behold the pond, filled with--"
Liaison: "God, that stench is awful."
Mayor: "...filled with beautiful specimens of all known--"
Liaison: "Dude, you have like five kinds of dead trout floating in your pool."

Yeah. I thought it would be cool to put a pond in my meeting hall and stock it with live fish. But they just sit there, and apparently die because after a while they change from "live rainbow trout" to "raw rainbow trout" and then "rotten raw rainbow trout."

For whatever reason, though, they don't actually generate miasma. I just put that in the story for the joke.

pffft!

Okay, so I don't think that Toady ever actually put in a meter for the amount of dissolved oxygen in a lake, unless I missed something...

Are you sure that your trout didn't air-drown on the way to the lake, first?

Or that they didn't get into combat somehow?

Unlike proper creatures, vermin fishs when caught are considered "things"

Yeah, that's what i thought at first. When I first noticed it, I thought maybe they had died en route to the pond. So I tried it again. They were alive when they got in, and within a few days they were raw fish.

It's a mystery. A hilarious mystery.

EDIT: While we're at it, why are trout classed as vermin? They're bigger than cats. Can this be repaired through modding? Are large-creature fish actually fishable? Or what? I've never modded a fish before.

You can catch tuna.  You have to use cage traps.  Underwater cage traps.

The third trap design from this thread might help.

WOW.

That thread is amazing. Amazing.

Perhaps I will embark on the beach next time. And fill a pond with whales.

Is your pond deep enough?  Dwarves start swimming at 4/7, and fish will air-drown at 3/7, so if your pond is shallow, then your fish are drowning.

The ironic thing about a relaxation pond full of whales is that dwarves who see the whales will get scared and run away.  Because whales are wild animals, and dwarves get scared of wild animals even if those wild animals are completely harmless and unable to get out of the water anyway.

A relaxation pond full of tame sea serpents, on the other hand, is simply awesome, and hilarious to drop goblins into.

They're all vertical, backed in like Sardines. They can breath, they're in water so they won't crush themselves, but they need to be manually fed.

This gave me an idea.

What if you made a break room that was filled with wild (but not aggressive) animals that, when the dwarfs went there to go on break, they were scared out of going on break. That way they would get their asses back to work faster?
