Dominique Wakeman

Final goodbyes aren't drawn out. Taric promises to send Hoke the novels before he's ten minutes gone, and then the immortals that had been acting as stewards for Tarran, James, and Hoke usher the battered party out into the hangar proper. Despite the fact that you knew it was coming, despite the fact that you got to say goodbye, despite the fact that it was best for everyone, it still feels too sudden. You sniffle a little. Probably something in the air.
Taric sighs. "Surprised to say, I'm actually sorry to see them go. Come on, that's one thing down, many more to go."
You let Taric lead you away from the waiting area. The walls shudder around you, and you realize that's it. The ship has launched. You hope you're going to see them again, but things happen. Particularly to people who fight against the Technocracy.
"I know you don't want to be here," Taric says suddenly, cutting off your moribund thoughts. "You're only staying because I offered to help find your husband. However, there's something you should see before you make any permanent decisions. If you still want to go, then I'll help you as best I can." Taric doesn't look back at you as he speaks, he just keeps moving through the endless maze of corridors as if he'd walked them all his life.
You descend several floors by a seemingly random mixture of elevators and stairs before Taric stops in front of a pair of heavy double doors. "You remember the enclave of survivors Jake Fern talked about? Well, thanks to a team that Tarran met acting as my ambassadors, I've actually convinced them to have a little meeting with me. Now, I'm going to be a little occupied while I'm speaking, so I'd appreciate it if you'd stop any assassination attempts that may occur. They probably won't, but I'd just like to be on the safe side. Oh, and try not to kill anyone. I don't want to look like a psychopathic dictator, I want to look like a cultured and benevolent dictator. Any questions?"

Despite the fact that you can't see the research facility anymore, you still stare somewhat forlornly back out one of the ship's holographic pseudo-windows. It had taken Hoke a moment to re-adjust to handling the controls manually, but he seemed fine now. The ship was on its way, and its plush comforts were a welcome relief, but... It still felt like leaving Dominique behind. This was necessary for you, and you're sure whatever Dom did was necessary for her, but it doesn't stop you from worrying. Taric hadn't been the most stable person, and he seems even less so now. You can't really throw stones in the field of mental stability, but Taric isn't someone that would be safe to be around if he snapped. Assuming he hasn't already.
You finger the amber bottle he gave you. You've changed clothes and rinsed, but you haven't been able to bring yourself to use the cure. Part of that is that you're not exactly sure how to make the ship's medical systems use it, and part of it is the fact that you're a little leery of injecting yourself with unknown chemicals. Taric didn't have a reason to hurt you intentionally, but there was still a LOT he could do by accident. You put away the bottle, resolving, for at least the fourth time, to make a decision soon.
The ship's internal communications gives you a warning beep before Hoke's voice starts coming through. "Hey, James, are you using a phone, or a radio, or anything like that?"
That was an odd question to lead with. "No, why?"
"There's a signal, and I have no idea where it's coming from."
You think for a moment. "Taric's probably just sending you the romance novels."
"Unfortunately, no, that's not it. The signal is coming from inside the ship, you better get up to the cockpit."

Dom nodded. "Yeah, I got it. Shoot people in the legs if they rush the stage or something." She stared at the back of his head as they walked. "What's this thing you're wanting me to see? Does it have anything to do with the meeting we're going to?"

What's this thing you're wanting me to see? Does it have anything to do with the meeting we're going to?"

Taric smiles. "Everything." With that, he turns and pushes the doors open.  Left with little other choice, you follow.
The room is large, very, very large. The door you went through leads out onto a platform raised a good twenty feet above the rest of the room. On the lower level massive rows of seating form wings to the left and right of the stage while the area directly in front of the speaker's dais is reserved for standing room only. There is very little standing room left.
A couple hundred people wait in the lower section of the amphitheater. Some of them are in defensive positions in the rings of seating, but most of them are sitting or standing in the region directly in front of the stage. Every single one of them appears to be armed, and it isn't all pop guns either. [Observation 16]  There are at least two full on machine guns pointed at the stage, one set up in either of the wings of seating. Roughly a third of the crowd is armed with some form of a rifle, and most of the others have at least sub-machine guns. You estimate your odds of actually stopping a determined attempt of against Taric's life at somewhere between laughable and insane.
Taric, however, seems unconcerned. He strides across the stage to a slightly raised platform at the very end. The crowd of survivors murmurs and goes still, making the sound of several weapons coming to cock all the more audible. Taric smiles in an admonishing manner, then steps up onto the raised platform. The platform glows softly, and a much larger holographic copy of Taric rises from the end of the stage. The amphitheaters of the Technocracy follow rather ancient rules of making an impression; make it big, make it bold, and make one person the focus of everyone's eye.
"I thank you for extending to me what little trust you have left, for that I am grateful." Taric's voice is magnified along with his image, and it fills the amphitheater completely. "I bring you good news, the Father has been excised from this place. I have assumed control of his creations, and you are free to go."
Taric's last words are met with a stunned silence. They probably would never have agreed to this meeting if they thought they were just going to get massacred, but it is equally apparent that they didn't expect to have their freedom simply given to them. To be honest, you didn't exactly expect Taric to just let them go either. Someone in the crowd let's out a shout, you can't tell if its in exultation or simple relief, but it breaks something within the survivors. Sound spreads like wildfire until the entire crowd seems to be roaring. [Failed roll not shown] Every nerve in your body is painfully aware of the fact that all of these screaming people are both armed and probably a couple yards past the edge of sanity. Attempting to concentrate on all the possible threats leaves you feeling disoriented.
"I would, however, be very remiss if I did not give you a better gift than sudden freedom," Taric booms, his voice rolling over the crowd and quieting them somewhat. It's odd, you never would have thought him the kind of person who would be comfortable speaking in front of crowds. He sounds... different. "There is a revolution going on, and they are taking whoever they can press into joining them, I know because I used to be part of their number. The Technocracy is in rage, and they are destroying everywhere that they cannot control, I know because I survived them. The fragile balance is breaking apart, abominations like the Father run rampant and the very gate to Sol is non-functional."
The last statement gets a reaction out of the crowd. The Father they knew of, the Unchained are not their problem, and the Technocracy is a devil they've known for a long time, but the gate is the only link to Earth and the other civilized worlds. They'd almost lost their lives, but they'd always had a faint glimmer of hope that they might somehow get home. Taric seems to be working very hard to dash that.
"I am sorry to have to give you this news, but bitter and sweet must be taken together. This moon is in turmoil, and I do not think it to be the only one. However, if you wish to simply leave here as soon as possible, I will have an escort arranged and safe passage will be given to as many as want it, but I ask you to consider another option. I ask you to consider staying with me. I cannot offer the righteous fervor of the Unchained rebellion, I cannot give you the benefits of the leading edge that the Technocracy can bestow, I cannot even promise that you will have the same freedom that you might find wandering on your own. All I can give is my oath to help you survive, to give you what purpose I can, to give you what comfort I can, and to give you what control over your own fate that I can." Taric stops for a moment, surveying the crowd. There's an odd strain around his good eye, as if he's doing something much harder than giving a speech. "You have survived much that no man or woman born should have to endure, but I cannot in honesty tell you that it is the end. There is no rescue party on its way here, there's just me. This place has been your prison, and now, instead of fleeing when you have the chance, I ask you to make it your fortress. Together we can stand against whatever comes, but divided we are both at the mercy of forces far greater than ourselves. I ask you to stay and help me, but I will hold none against their will. When any of you have come to your decision, find one of the former minions of the Father, and give it your message. It will relay it to me. Take as much time as you need with your decision, I cannot stress its importance enough." With that, he steps off the platform. [Luck 19] Nothing seems to be attempting to kill him, and, while the susurrus from the crowd is building exponentially, all seems to have gone off without a hitch.
"That was what I wanted you to see, Dominique Wakeman," Taric says as he nears you, his voice soft. "The beginnings of a people. I have an army, but an army is little good without something to fight in order to expand or protect. The Unchained think small, they simply want to repaint the existing system with their own colors. I doubt they'll succeed, but even if they do, it will simply mean that machine they fought so hard to 'overthrow' is now their only trophy. I want more than that hypocrisy. Dominique, this is a chance to found something far, far greater than yourself. The Technocracy is busy with the Unchained, and the bulk of their forces are centuries away if the Gate remains inoperable. With your help, there is no end to what this brave new empire can accomplish." Sizier stops, frowning when you don't jump on the opportunity. He shakes his head suddenly. "I'm sorry, my blood is up. You don't have to decide now. Like them," he says, gesturing back at the crowd, "you should think it over."
"In the meantime," he adds, offhand, "there's a slight problem that you can help me with. If you do it, I'll personally help sort through the archive files for references to your dear husband. Of course, you're free to begin your search immediately but... it might be slow without my help."
It takes a very odd man to offer you part of an empire one moment, then extort favors the next. You wonder just how much sanity Taric has left.

James sighs, barely restrains a curse, and slipping Simone's Song into his pocket for easier reach but not putting it on goes towards the cockpit.

If it's not one thing, its another. You make sure your weapon is in easy reach and head to the cockpit.
Surprisingly, Tarran is sitting co-pilot to Hoke. Considering that you didn't think they could stand each other for longer than ten minutes at a time, this is impressive. It also doesn't bode well for the magnitude of the problem.
"Good, you're here," Tarran says as soon as he notices you. "Hoke gave you the basics. There was a signal coming from somewhere on the ship, it was broadcast to several somewhere else on the ship, and now we've lost it. Thus endeth what we know of the situation."
Hoke smiles toothily. It's an odd expression on a deadhead's atrophied facial muscles. "But, considering that we just left the place of insane computer viruses that like to kill people, we're pretty sure it's not just a benign little glitch. We've managed to work out a few of the locations that whatever it was managed to broadcast to, but only two of them are accessible. Since I know as much about fighting as either of you two know about flying, I thought I'd stay here and hold down the fort while you two checked the destinations out."
Tarran sighs. "In short, he wants to lock himself in the cockpit and cower while we make sure that we don't have stowaways."
"Damn straight," Hoke agrees without a trace of guilt.
"So," Smith continues "you want the PD turret or engineering?"

This was a moment in time in which James rather heavily questioned why he didn't curse. Could he not get one moment to have a BREAK from all this?! Apparently not. James groaned. Again. He then reached into his pocket and actually put on Simone's Song. Chances were good he'd end up needing it, after all... "I'll take the PD turret."

Dom had stood next to Taric the entire speech, feeling a little overwhelmed. She had always hated large groups of people - especially when they weren't on her side. In her experience, only three or four people in a group could attack in a melee at one time without getting in each other's way, which was bad enough. But people armed with guns of every type? She would have been screwed if they had turned hostile. She felt much better when the speech had ended without violence... although that bit of strain she saw on Taric's face indicated he was probably using his own empathetics to sway the group's opinion. She couldn't be certain of it, but it was likely.

But what he said... no travel back to Earth? Back to home? She sighed. That might be for the best, considering how the Technocracy locked her up here - more or less. She could live with that... if she could find Jeffrey. If he was here, she could make an honest go at building a new life here on Eridani. Hell, she could be somebody important here. Maybe she could even give the pair of them a better life than they had under the Technocracy - with her support, maybe he could be a high-ranking official of some sort. She wasn't cut out for that kind of position, but if she could help Taric out she'd have some pull around here and could set things up to suit her.

That was, of course, if he was still here and alive. If he wasn't... then this was all there was. Fighting off the Technocracy and the Unchained, maybe for the rest of her life, which might be considerably shorter than she would hope. Either way, this was her best - her only - lead. She needed Taric for this, and they both knew it. He was a better hacker - hell, he was better with computers in general. If there was anyone who could quickly and easily access the entire system for this search, it was him. She could not do this alone. Fine. She would do this thing. Fair was fair; he needed something, she needed something, so favors could be exchanged. And afterward... where else did she have to go?

"So what is it you need me to do... Boss?"

You and Tarran head out to find out what the heck is going on, and Hoke, true to his word, closes and locks the door to the cockpit behind you.
Climbing up into the PD turret is easy, finding out if there's anything different isn't. You haven't actually been up in here before. There's a chair for the gunner, but since the guns aren't active at the moment, the rest of the small room is fairly featureless. It was designed for utility, nothing more. You're somewhat relieved that nothing tried to kill you, but you no longer really know what you're looking for.
[Observation 14+1] A couple scuffs on the wall catch your eye. On closer inspection they seem trivial. There's probably an access panel to maintenance one of the turret's systems, and the scuffs are just signs of repeated access. Still, some of the marks look recent. You're pretty sure you could remove the panel.

"So what is it you need me to do... Boss?"

Taric winces slightly when you call him Boss, which is a little strange for someone who likes programming computers to call him Lord Sizier. The tic, however, disappears almost instantaneously. "I need you to find and kill Ashley Fey and Harry Nakamuno," he replies simply. "Their crusade to burn the Father out of this place really didn't end with the Father's death. Apparently forcing the base to nuke itself is the only way they're going to be sure he's beaten here, which is a bit of a crimp in my plans. My forces have been harrying them, and they brought down Grey, but.." Taric grimaces in frustration. "My army doesn't improvise that well, and I've been unable to devote my full attention to the matter. My new and improved soldiers aren't ready yet, and you happen to be really good at killing things. Find them, kill them, come back. That isn't too hard, is it?"

Dom closed her eyes. She had liked Ashley. She hadn't trusted the cyborg girl fully, but she had liked her. Still, the fact of the matter was they were going to detonate the base. That would likely result in the death of her, Taric, and all the people here... and even if they all evacuated far enough away in time, all of the data here would be lost to her. Not to mention the radioactive fallout probably wouldn't be good for New Hensfield nearby. Her life and her search were important to her, and protecting all of these people helped ease her decision. She opened her eyes and focused them on Taric's remaining one.

"Complete destruction, or do you want enough of the cyborgs left to study?"

"That's what I love about you, Dominique. You always know the right thing to say," Taric says, beaming at you. "I would prefer having something left to study, it would be a welcome diversion from my work. However, if keeping them intact for study would impair your ability to kill them, just kill them. Their death is worth more than whatever interest I met find in dissecting one. Now, I have some things that I need to get done before I can conquer the worlds. Emily can help you with any questions, necessary directions, et cetera. She's tied to you and should, theoretically, be accessible almost anywhere you go." Taric pats you on the shoulder an winks. At least, you think it's a wink. Kinda hard to tell right now. "Have fun."
Taric turns and walks off into the complex, losing himself around a corner while you prepare your next move.

Considering that this is a ship, not a base, you doubt the maintenance panel is going to lead to anything terribly large. Probably not something large enough to hurt you, anyway.
Unless, of course, someone stuffed the maintenance compartment full of ants. You try not to think about that option.
It takes a bit of careful banging, but the panel slides away. It is, as you thought, a small maintenance compartment. It's perhaps eighteen inches deep, a foot tall, and three feet long. Inside are the expected array of lines and cables, each with brightly colored parts that denote replaceable sections. What is not expected is the package that has been hastily secured to the inside of the compartment. The package appears to consist of three ceramic cylinders, bound together in a frame of plastic and metal.
[Mechanics 17+1] Being a scanner was mostly about keeping people toeing the Technocrat line, but there was a brief course during your training that covered basic counter-terrorism. One of the sections in that course was how to recognize a bomb. This is a bomb. You recognize it. You also recognize a very distinct urge to run in the opposite direction very fast.
   Your head hurts slightly.

Dom thought as she walked back to her room. "Emily, what kinda resources do I have access to? Can I ask for some suits to back me up or is it gonna be just me and whatever I can get my hands on? And can you track the cyborgs, give me a good place to ambush or cut them off at, that kinda thing?" Once she was in her room, she put on the heaviest armor she had access to and checked to see what weapons she had available there, in addition to anything Emily told her about.

Oh God. A bomb. OH GOD. A BOMB. The primal fear and struggling for memories of training prevented James from worrying about the slight headache and its possible meanings.
Instead James, after the briefest moment of hesitation, decided to go with what his training told him on defusing bombs. If training said just to run... well... he would just run.

Once she was in her room, she put on the heaviest armor she had access to and checked to see what weapons she had available there, in addition to anything Emily told her about.

Emily's reply is immediate, her voice quiet but still easily audible. "You have access to almost all available resources. Your personal armory is located in your room, a stipend of medical supplies has been placed in your washroom. Additional ammunition can be had from the armory. All of the Immortals will respond to your voice commands and obey so long as that command does not violate a direct order on the part of Lord Sizier. No sufficient sample of your handwriting was made available, and thus they will not respond to your written commands." Emily's voice is odd, fading back and then jumping ahead of you as she switches between individual speakers in the hallway. You get used to it on your walk back. "Tracking the intruders is difficult. This is what has been causing Lord Sizier trouble, as the might of his forces cannot be brought to bear on what it cannot find. They are estimated to be somewhere on floor 15, using and amplifying the natural interference from the maintenance subsystems. I can keep you informed of what I learn, but I will be less useful there."
You re-enter your room, noting that the sheets you were covering yourself with earlier have vanished along with your bed. You must have gotten a cleaning service along with the company room. The drawers that make up your armory are unchanged, and you quickly strap on the heaviest suit of armor available before you take a careful stock of the rest of your gear.

Instead James, after the briefest moment of hesitation, decided to go with what his training told him on defusing bombs. If training said just to run... well... he would just run.

Your training doesn't tell you anything about defusing bombs. It teaches that, in the unlikely event that you find a bomb, you should report it immediately to the Technocrat SDD sector and cordon off the area. Lacking a defusal and disarmament crew, or really the ability to cordon of the area, your training doesn't help you. Running, while it would satisfy the lizard brain desire to get away from the bad scary thing before it go bang-bang, doesn't do you a lot of good when you're trapped on a transport flying through an alien forest at high speed.
There's a sudden beep, and your heart stops for a moment before you realize it was the intercom. "Well, I've got nothing scary here," Tarran's voice announces, his tone relieved. "At least, nothing has tried to kill me and I don't really see a lot of places for something to hide. You got anything, or should we have Hoke run a diagnostic on the internal sensors?"

James wasted no time in responding. "A bomb! There's a bomb over here! WHAT DO I DO?!"

Dominique took a moment to examine the armor and figure out what kind of ammunition it needed. Then she loaded up the rest of the .50 cal ammunition, took the Cerico and the ammo for it, and finally the Artemis and the ammo for that. Then she went in the washroom to look for the promised medical supplies and took two or three ORS if they were available, and a medkit whether or not she found any ORS. "Hey, Emily. What happened to my Fuath chemical gun?" she asked as she went toward the elevator - and also attempted to get two or three Immortals to come with her as she went, under the assumption she passed any.
