You slide to a stop and flatten yourself against the wall, using the corner for cover as you peek around the edge. [Passive Kinetics 5+2] The other three immortals are there, holding James and waiting in front of a pair of mass transit elevators. The Immortals are loaded for close combat, short range suppression carbines in addition to a series of ridged spines growing out of their forearms. They look bulkier than the snipers, slower probably, but you doubt that bulk is just going to be puppy fat.
Your observation is interrupted by the elevator closest to the Immortals chiming faintly, its heavy doors beginning to slide open with unfortunate speed.

Even with no indication of which way the rest of the immortals went, you're saved from guessing by Tarran dashing off ahead of you, apparently intent on something. He might not be the most agreeable soul, but the abilities of his group might lend him an edge in this situation. Besides, his guess is as good as yours.
[Dex 2] [Jordan Dex 3] [Harry Dex 4-1] You start forwards, signalling Jordan and Harry to follow, but your foot catches on a chunk of burned chitin, the sudden difference in height throwing your balance sideways. You curse and stagger until you get your balance back, the slip wasn't serious, but it did cost you precious momentum.
Jordan runs past as you start to build up momentum again. From his slightly off-beat gait you can tell that he's not exactly at his best on the shadowy -and oddly crunchy- terrain either.
Harry, despite his encumbrance, is able to draw level with you after your slip. His momentum catching up to your acceleration.
Jordan is, however, the only one of you to make it level with Tarran. Both yourself and Harry are just yards behind, but you've got a feeling that might still be too far to help.

Dominique WakemanOnce she had the papers together, she answered Taric's question. "I couldn't read them, Tar. I can kinda sorta see in the dark, but not well enough to read by, and they were all stapled up on the wall. I thought they might be some techno-babble-bullshit, y'know, your kind of thing." She started reading them. At the very least, even if the author was a pretentious halfwit, it would be more interesting than standing around waiting for the hacker to finish what he was doing.
It's a little embarrassing when Taric ditches the papers as useless, and admittedly they weren't what you were expecting, but that doesn't mean they aren't going to be useful. You gather the papers off the floor where Taric let them drop, using the faint light from the hologram to attempt to sort the papers. [Observation 3] Between your psychic double vision and the limited light, It's headache inducing work. The presence of page numbers on most of the pieces of paper helps a great deal, and with a bit of work you're able to sort out about a third of the novel.
With enough sorted to get a decent start, you sit down cross-legged on the metal floor of the room, keeping your back to the holo so you can read with its light.
Within ten pages it is readily evident that the novel is terrible, unrealistic, and so mind numbingly cheesy that it makes part of your brain shut down to protect itself.
It's best thing you've read in a long time.

You toss the papers aside as soon you're finished illustrating your point to Dominique, seriously, who on earth would read that trash? That question, however, gets readily answered when Dominique scoops up the fallen papers and begins to put them in order. Well, you've never accused her of having good taste.

With Dom occupied for the moment, you turn back to the task at hand. You had a thought before she started bludgeoning you, something that was actually kind of good... Ah, yes.
You nod to yourself as you wave up the system clearances, disabling most of the user interface safety regs so you can access the outdated files. [Mech 1 bonus negated] As you disable a safety block keyed to Technocrat data regulations the screens shimmer dangerously, images and numbers breaking apart into unreadable splinters as the emitters required for three-dimensional holographics fall out of sync.
You frown in consternation at the unstable display. You have no idea why that just happened, and if the half 'e' that's trying to invade Dominique's head is any indication, the issue is getting worse by the second.

James went up at the armed men, breaking the bond or simply willing his way through them, and then taking the guns right out of the hands of the gunmen, once again ignoring the bullets that would inevitably come.
You yell out a warning to your fellow prisoner as the door slides open to admit the expected pair of guards. The taller of the two gives same humorless grin as last time, leering down at Her as he delivers the exact same speech as before.

Well, it was the exact same speech until She managed to go from kneeling to shoulder checking his throat. [Blight Brawl 3+1] (Technocrat Figment 1 Hp -26] The technocrat staggers backwards, coughing and sputtering in surprise and pain. His partner freaks, clawing his pistol out of his holster and pointing it wildly at the escapee.
Of course, that takes his focus well off of you. You focus on the cloth that binds your wrists, trying to make it disappear or phase your hands through it. [Will 1] You feel sick and cold, a minor, but perfect, echo of the feeling you got from the black tendrils touching you. (James Dreamspace HP -10) Pushing that feeling down, you take the more tried and true route of brute force. [Strength 4+1] You struggle against you bonds, roaring as you pull your arms out from behind your back and rip your bonds to shreds in the process. [Melee 3 Vs Technocrat Figment 2 dodge 2] You continue the motion, bringing your hands out from behind your back and bringing them together on either side of the surprised Technocrat's head. [Brawl 4+1] (Technocrat Figment 2 Hp -27) The guard jerks backwards, stumblingly back into the far wall and clutching his head.
It's two on two now, hardly worse odds than you had the last time you went through this.
