I have never played half life, been told it was good but have never played it...

Maybe it's just me but I feel Valve is kind of completely overrated. I'll be fair and say I don't remember anything of the original Half-Life, having played it about ten years ago, but the story of HL2 is incredibly boring. It's just another generic 'alien invasion' plot line and naming the man character Gordon Freeman, I mean, GORDON FREE MAN, is insulting. Like, 'durr, thanks for pointing that out, I was too ignorant to get that this guy is the protagonist without your ham-handed assistance.' Plus he's a dweeb in a tech suit. Let's be realistic here: I don't like Master Chief, but if I had to pick who would survive a war against an alien race, I would put my money on the genetically engineered, cybernetically enhanced super-soldier in the cutting edge armor with the best weaponry and soldiers the military can provide and not some mute four-eyed college grad in a HEV suit with a rag-tag band of rebels at his back and a crowbar in hand. Hell, I would give Jack or Delta much higher odds than Gordon. At least they have Plasmids, and Delta is also a super-soldier of a sort. Serious Sam and Duke Nukem? I prefer Sam, but at least both are over-the-top caricatures of action heroes, so yeah, they're both better than Freeman. Doom Guy? More believable as a hero. I could also rail about Alyx Vance for awhile. First of all, she's not that attractive and her personality is bland, so I don't really get why people are all about her. I guess because she gives you a hug at the beginning of Episode 1, and really, if you're that starved for some sort of human contact, you're just pathetic. The few times you have to escort her she's an annoyance and is prone to getting killed, and during Episode 1 she actively tries to troll you into shooting her by doing things like make zombie sounds while you're walking in pitch-black tunnels.

Anyway, as for controls, it's just like every other first person shooter. Same for guns. You get a handgun, a revolver, an uzi, an assault rifle, a crossbow that fires superheated rods and works like Delta' speargun, a laser-guided rocket launcher, and the gravity gun, which I think is the only reason people like this game. It's basically just telekinesis, like in Psi-Ops, but it's always fun to play around with. There are a few puzzles in the game but they're annoying and detract from the experience rather than add to it; they're mostly just moving the environment around in ways a three-year-old could figure out. Like: 'gee, here's an empty basket hanging from a rope, with the other end attached to a hatch. I guess I'll put these cinderblocks in this basket to lower it and raise the hatch.' Honestly I'd rather just grab a keycard, swipe it in a slot, and keep going than waste time doing something boring just to move on.

As for the rest of Valve's stuff, quick review: haven't played Counterstrike in long enough that I wouldn't feel it fair to comment on; Portal was only funny the first time, stfu with all the catchphrases - and on that note I haven't played Portal 2 and don't really plan to; L4D is all right but it should have had a few more levels, same goes for L4D 2; Team Fortress 2 is fun from little I've played of it but I'm not a competitive gamer, so in fairness I'll say that while it's not for me it's probably the best of the lot.

My desire to find it has now dropped sharply...

I've only had two games that I ever disliked, and those I hated with a mad passion. Never ever buy shattered suns or starship captains, you will hate yourself and you will hate their designers.

Shattered suns made a lot of promises that it just couldn't keep, the true 3-D space combat had me really psyched into buying it, and the customization of ships that they touted lead me to believe that it would be a Sword Of The Stars (Awesome Game) with better space combat. Instead it was bug riddled and made me want to hurl after about ten seconds of watching the screen. Cool intro cut-scene, but it was all downhill from there.

Starship captains... well that was right after shattered suns and it was an impulse buy to get the bad taste of the former out of my mouth... Sort of like trying to get the taste of sour milk out by gargling mouthwash, except you accidentally grab the bottle of rubbing alcohol instead and end up spitting it everywhere and swearing. That game was a poorly made abomination to the genre that it attempted to cash in on, the damn thing was a glorified re-skin.

Cryostasis and Amnesia were both games that gave me a lot more than expected, amnesia particularly...

TBH I think the thing with Half-Life 2 is that people were really wowed by its graphics and refuse to hear anything bad about it because of how superior they were for the time, regardless of how lacking the game was in other areas. I appreciate graphics as much as the next guy, but come on. Fallout 1 and 2? Great games, even though they can't compare to Fallout 3 in terms of how the world of the game looks. Fallout 3 is awesome, don't get me wrong, but the first two games are every bit as good. :3 And on another note, Half-Life 2 is an unfinished game. There was supposed to be an Episode 3 but there never was, so it just ends on a cliffhanger after Episode 2. >.> I hate it when games leave shit open for a sequel that never materializes, like Psi-Ops did. Fun if difficult game, worst ending evar. "Oh hey, destroyed the big bad, but now shit's really about to hit the fan! Play the next game!" *Psi-Ops 2 is never made* *raegface*

But yeah, I'm glad I don't play many flight sims. :-\ Ace Combat 4, 5, and 0 are pretty good, and I love the beginning of the next-to-last mission in 5, both the cinema that precedes it and everything up to when you get the orders about two minutes after the cutscene stops. Actually, no wait, I love that entire mission and the one after it. Zero has some hard as hell missions but the last boss fight is pretty cool and makes sense in the context of the game (basically the entire game centers on concepts of knighthood like honor, such as an area of the country called 'the round table' where most of the fighting takes place, and the last fight is a joust of sorts with a guy in a highly advanced fighter that's shielded from all sides but the front, and you have to fly directly at him avoiding his OHKO laser while shooting missiles) and I love the music. Those are all for PS2, so if you like flight sims based on modern tech and can find them for cheap, pick them up. 5 is probably the best of the three IMO followed by Zero and then 4. I haven't played 1, 2, or 3 in forever and I never touched 6 so I have no opinions there. ^^;

Pre-Post Addition after noticing an avatar: Tarran, you like Ace Combat too? Which one is your favorite?

EUREKA!

The missing link in the recoil equation has been found!

An assault rifle that shoots a five round burst is now different from a rifle that fires a single high caliber round! (Shocking I know)

Now I just have to convert every single gun I ever created to have a critical threshold, a recoil sequence, and socket them all into my damage range sheet. *sigh* This may take awhile

Couple Points of interest while I work the rest out,

Criticals, still always rolled for on a natural 6, but they are no longer always triggered on a 4+1+1 or similar roll that comes to a six through the sum of its bonuses. Weapons instead have a critical threshold, this is the number that has to be rolled at or above to score a critical if you don't roll a natural six.  Some weapons and have a critical threshold lower than six, this indicates that they are much easier to score a crit with than standard weapons. Special ammunition can also lower the critical threshold.

New skill, Finesse is used instead of a glorified luck roll when determining whether or not the critical is confirmed or not.

Recoil, New mechanic used to simulate muzzle climb, each weapon will have a recoil sequencer (Generally between 1/6th and 1) this determines how hard it is to pull off repeated shots in one turn and is used to determine how many shots in a burst will hit the target after the first.

New skill, Fire control is used to determine how well you can keep your gun steady.

Damage Types, Used to allow armors soak different values from different damage sources, (A Hostile environment suit for instance can seal and raise its environmental soak to 100%) wear the right clothes for the right occasion. Energy, Ballistic, Piercing, concussive, laser, and environmental are the types of damage that personnel armor can soak.

(Going to run a turn after this, then integrate the new stuff and update all the weapons and armor.)

What makes you think that?

A benefit of the new burst mechanics means that armor is much more effect at stopping small arms fire, since it's dealing with multiple small impacts rather than soaking for the sum of five impacts.

I mean all the crippling since 3/5 of us have endurance as a kinda dump stat (thus we will all get crippled very, very quickly) and the medicine requiring a advanced medical kit to remove bullets.

Dominique Wakeman

"Ok, that should fix ya up. Now I gotta get to the boss; try not to hurt yourself," Dom admonished him as she made her way to Tarran. "OK, sit down. Let me see what I can do for ya." After getting shocked he probably needed some medical attention.

Well after all that screaming the boss probably needs a bandage or a staple or something. You make your way around the pond carefully avoiding the worst spots on the ground, then you realize what you're doing. It's very nearly pitch black, you shouldn't be able to see the crap on the ground, let along step around it. It isn't like seeing it, it's more like just knowing that it's there, you don't need to see it anymore than you need to see the ring on your finger to know that it's there. Well, at least your life isn't dull. With a grumble of mild discontent at the unasked change to your bodily functions by something you don't understand you walk the rest of the way up to Tarran.

Sure enough he's still busted bloody, though he's slightly better than the last time you saw him. Ashely's man patched him up but you're sure you can improve on the job if Tarran would stand still.

Tarran Smith

"I'm fine, it's just a little jolt. Now, help me with this goddamn door before this idiot-" *points at James* "-kills himself kicking the door. "

Try the door again, requesting help from anyone around.

Dom appears quite intent on doctoring you despite your insistence that you're going to be fine, you just need help with the damn door before James decides to bash his brains out on it. In the end she brandishes the medical stapler and threatens to staple you to the wall unless you hold still and stop being an asshole about it. You mentally make a note to never have her treat anyway with psyche problems. [Dom Int 2, Dex 4, Fight 4, Luck 1 +5 Treatment 10/20] You laugh at the thought of her telling a depression patient to "stop being an asshole" at the wrong moment and she staples you in the chest by accident. Ouch.

Ashley Fey & Jordan Grey

Jordan pops the seal on the implant, [Mech 5+1, Int 3+1, Dex 5, Luck 4 Treatment 19/10] wasting no time in repairing the damage and diverting the power back along the proper channels. This is why he didn't like the finnicky activated stuff, to much shit that could hit the fan.

---

Harry Nakamuno

While Ash was getting her work done Harry works on making a pile of the enemy equipment in the dark, none of the ammunition fit his gun but they were the same type as used by the other group, so it shouldn't be a problem as long as the others could hold up their end.

Spoiler: Loot (click to show/hide)

---

James Evan

James would like to go back to the main group since he failed to break th edoor down.

You rub your buttocks vigorously as you pick yourself up, note to self; Do not try to kick open six inch thick sliding doors made of alloyed steel. Main group is bit difficult, Dom is right here with Tarran, Taric is somewhere back south, and the others are god knows where. Considering your track record with moving about you stay with the largest group of people who you're for sure on their location. This means you stand right where you are, pulling your pilfered clothing tighter in the chilly breeze from the AC.

---

Taric Sizier

Head over to the unconcious Immortal, Mind probe him. If I can't do this for whatever reason, Try and remove the armour from it. Also laugh at Tarran/James.

Growling at having to move after being stitched up like a childs doll, you carefully seek out the path along the pond. Guiding yourself along the trail leading to the mind almost as unusual as your own. A long walk an a few near slips later you're kneeling by the unconscious body of the immortal. Carefully placing a hand on his head you reach out into it's mind, searching for... something. [A. Empathetics 4]

The outer shell has a separate brain located in a strung out line laying where the spine would be, a brain that is desperately attempting to restart the human mind that Dom dealt such a blow to. The human is in a curious state, while it is difficult to make an accurate conclusion based off of a damaged brain your best guess lies along the lines of a form of lobotomy... This individual's ability to make choices and perceive morality has been looped through the brain of the bio-suit, forming a curious kind of symbiotic organism. Without the suit the person is a vegetable, without the person the suit is useless, nearly incapable of movement. [Intuition 4] It's all a little fuzzy but you think you might be able to extract and re-live the host's last memory.

BOOYAH FOR TOUGH CHICKS! It's kind of sad that of the five of us, I have the highest endurance and the second highest strength, and wolfchild has the second highest endurance. :P Just a question, though. I have a lot of #/8ths. Would it be possible to just roll all of that into one or two skill points when we reshuffle the skills?

"Well, if you'd stop moving around like an impatient asshole I could be done a lot quicker, boss," Dom said, menacing him with the stapler. "Hey, James? You mind grabbing that flechette rifle?" she yelled over her shoulder. "It might come in handy soon. Get the Jormungandr ammo too and give it to boss, he probably needs it."
