Besides, what you did is unusual but not exactly cruel. The Matriarch is the kind of person who would pull a mental switch on somebody's pleasure and pain reception and make them pull their own teeth and fingernails out with pliers if she believed it needed to be done.

If they win, they write history. If they lose, then... well you get the idea.
