HFS FPS (potential spoilers within)
« on: February 09, 2011, 12:18:17 am »

So, for the first time in my tragically unimaginative history of playing DF I actually reached HFS.

I managed to contain the situation but now I'm having horrible framerate issues because of so many isolated HFS.

Is there a way to deal with this aside from abandoning?

Steal the NASA supercomputer. Never have to worry about FPS issues again!

Centration. Similar to Spacestation 13, but in 3D and first-person. Sounds damn awesome.
NanoTrasen Exploratory Team: SS13 in DF.

Touche. Though I was looking more for a solution to the HFS problem now that it is out of the bag. I don't think Urist McHammerdwarf and his six bronze-clad recruits are up to the task.

Generally no, which is the reason so many people avoid HFS.  Not because it's dangerous, nay, they thrive on danger!  But rather because it kills the FPS.  You may be able to stifle it if you're able to slaughter the demons, push them back, and wall off the edge of the map, perhaps via obsidian casting, which would prevent any demons from spawning since they'd have no available squares to spawn on.  But, good luck doing that at 5 FPS with bronze soldiers and scaredy-cat civilians.

Multithreading?

Solution: watch the denizens of the deep methodically slaugter your dwarfs at a 1 fps

If I remember correctly, the borders of hell behave like that of caverns, so you can build as close to them as you want. Then just building walls is much less work (but still a lot as clowns will shred your workers).

Strip mine the layers above hell and cover them in cave in traps. A diamond lattice of single supports with a floor tile on top will instantly kill any building destroyer. Once all the original inhabitants are dead, the pathing goes back to normal, like HFS was never breached.

I breached HFS. I watched by underarmored, underarmed, and undertrained dwarves get slaughtered. But we got 15 of em!

So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

You have adamantine now, so...

Also, danger room.

No, no, not an adamantine danger room...  That would be... well, not even Fun, just stupid.

I'm considering the potential of "driving back hell" namely by getting a few squads of adamantine soldiers, danger-room trained to super-legendary, and to cleanse the entire pit so I can wall it off.

That may work, but remember--A. exploding demons, B. Demon disease--if your blue dwarves don't melt, and/or rot, you just might make it.

I don't breach into the HFS room because its dangerous (nope i don't experience HFS ... there were 40 demons that killed my holy fortress.. everithing was BLWADY , they managed to get throught my main stair to the fortress... worst day ever , this will teach me to do mining operations outside the fortress...

The one time I broke into the circus, the clowns refused to come out of their tent. Such a shame, I had dwarves clad in full adamantine armor, and I was wondering if they would put up a fight.

I even kicked sacrificial cats down the hole to lure them out, but they just wouldn't take the bait. All they did was waddle in circles down there and lag up the place.
