Maybe the 'legacy' of white americans is the problem.  Racism, slavery, genocide, no wonder people say 'white pride' is racist, it's like my early american ancestors had nothing better to do than destroy any culture different from their own.

Maybe this is why we need a 'white pride' month. Because white people did do more then steal, kill and destroy. Look at the computer in front of you, it is made possible using a device known as a transistor, invented by some old white guy. We are more then just cookie cutter steriotypes to be used as the defult in literiture, and more then just villans who oppress all before them.

^ Yeah, true.

What we need to do is abolish ever '(insert ethnic subgroup here) history month' because to have different months for those subgroups implies that they are different. Abolishing them is the only way to acknowledge that skin type doesn't change anything.

Well that would be no fun! Cultural events are good! They shouldn't be about saying that this group of people has this skin colour, they should be about promoting a culture and history.

The problem is that the idea of a "black" culture only reinforces the belief that black and white people are different. If we don't consider everyone to have a shared history, a world history, then how can we ever achieve harmony? Yes cultures should be preserved but people shouldn't think they have some special difference because of their ancestry. They weren't actually part of that culture, it is no more theirs than anyone else's.

Again, I don't see this supposed portrayal of white people as all evil. I mean, almost all main characters in books, tv shows and movies are white males. The very good and very bad are represented, quite well. Besides actual portrayals of skinheads, I haven't seen almost any 'he's white, he's bad' portrayals.

If everyone has a shared history and a world history, is that not all the more reason to learn of history not within your own culture...?

Well yes, very much so! Although the inverse is true, in that there is reason to teach about your own history.

Yeah.  If only there were some way of teaching that in addition to black history.  Perhaps you could devote a bit of time, perhaps 1/12th of it, to studying black history and then study white history the rest of the time.

Well yes I agree but I think it's more important to teach history as a whole. Obviously the histories of individual countries are ok because that's really what history revolves around, nation states. However, history shouldn't revolve around the context of different racial histories, it's everyone's history.

Sarcasem noted. Does anybody spend any time at all learning about white culture? We say 11 months out of the year, but in all realisem that is like saying xmas is still a christan holiday. It is not what it came from.

I think we do spend 'any time at all' learning the culture of white people. Kind of live in it too, which would make it hard not to pick something up.

Ah, I see. Conteperary culture, something shared by people from all walks of life, contributed to by countless cultures, is 'white' culture because it is the defult.

Well, one could argue that Rap music isn't 'black' anymore because many who listen to it, and some who make it, are in fact not black. Popular culture where I live is most heavily influenced by Western culture.

One could argue like that, but it wouldn't adress the point. When I go check out what is being done for black cultural festivles, I get people playing the didgeridoo, not rapping. So I don't see what rap has to do with this.

Well, I can't think of a single example of a music type which is shunned for being white. There's all sorts of music festivals, and I'm certain there's a good deal of folks who aren't aborignal who play or have interest in listening to didgeridoo. Not my cup of tea though, so couldn't name any of them, regardless of cultural background.

Edit - Oh, and I think I've said all I care to on this subject. I think I'd just be going around in circles if I kept going.
