We managed to get 90 planes in the air to defend it. After a prolonged and massive dogfight we lost 18 fighters and destroyed 15 American aircraft, damaging twice that number.
Those are bad numbers:-/
You lost 20% of your fighting units, Americans lost only 5%...
Let's hope things get better.

2 June

Our subs are trying to score some hits on carriers, not being very effective. To the aircrew's credit, they are managing to maintain enough planes to provide a defence.

I'm dispatching the Cruiser Oi with a destroyer escort to try and torpedo a small Carrier off the coast of Saipan.

Bombers from Peleiliu are ferrying supplies to Saipan in preperation for a landing. The landing transports have been spotted by a submarine.

Day 3 of the Battle for Saipan

SS RO-67 is damaged by depth charges off the coast of 'Pagan' Island.
A submarine gets within range of the CV Lexington.... But fails to inflict damage after firing 6 torpedos. She is pursued and depth charged, suffering light damage.
SS RO-36 sneaks within range of the Light carrier Chenago and launches 4 torpedos.... and HITS!
The carrier is hit by 2 torpedos, is heavily damaged and on fire.
RO-36 slinks away unharmed...

Raid on Tinian

Tinian is raided by about 150 American aircraft.
We managed to get 75 or so in the air to face them. 5 of our fighters were destroyed, but we shot down 3 bombers and damaged many more.
The runway took 22 bomb hits.
In a second similar raid we lost 10 more fighters and the runway took another 55 bomb hits :(

The airfields are pretty damaged, and we are running out of planes to field against them. My group has only 4 fly worthy. We will probably loose our ability to resist American bombing runs tomorrow.

3 June

Transfered 50 Zero fighters from Iwo Jima to Saipan. Hopefully the reinforcements will allow us to hold a little longer and wait for our carriers.

Report

American battleships bombard Saipan. Our coastal guns fire back setting the BB california and Pennsylvania on fire.
American landing craft begin assaulting the beach. Two LST's(Transport ships) are heavily damaged by our coastal guns.
4 more transports are damaged, 166 Americans are killed.

SS-8 is depth charged and heavily damaged off the coast of Saipan. She damaged one transport.

Tinian raided again

We manage to get 100 fighters in the air against an incoming American raid of 200 planes. We lost 9 fighters in the dogfight, destroying 10 American bombers and damaging more.
The runway takes another pounding of 45 bomb hits.

A second raid resulted in 10 aircraft destroyed each side and 16 more hits to the runway.
We managed to drive them off on the third raid, loosing another 5 aircraft.

The Americans continue to unload troops onto the beaches of Saipan.

SS-8 succumbs to its wounds and sinks.

LGEN Masoa Watanabe is placed in command of the defence of Saipan. He is a well respected and aggressive officer.

The forces on Saipan are about to attempt to assault the American forces and drive them back into the sea.

I am still alive, and got my first confirmed kill :D

Shit, eh? WHen do your reinforcements arrive?

Within the next couple of turns I hope  :P

4 june

Report

Our coastal guns continue to fire at incoming landing craft, scoring a couple of transports.

A couple of our subs get depth charged, they may be lost.

CL Oi is spotted and dive bombers attack it, none hit. Two brave fighter pilots intercepted the 30 odd incoming planes.

Raid on Saipan

We get 60 aircraft in the air to intercept another raid on Saipan. We lost 5 fighters and destroyed & damaged over 20 American dive bombers. The runway took another 37 hits.
The second raid is fended off, we lost 10 planes and destroyed 10 American planes.
Several more small raid on Saipan hit the runway. Also dive bombers began dropping bombs on our ground forces.

Charge!
Our forces charge the Americans dug in along the beachfront. During the battle we lost 2346 men, killing 646 Americans. During a tank battle we lost 7 tanks, and 29 were disabled. The American tanks suffered 1 destroyed and 22 disabled.
It is decided that we dig in and let the enemy come to us.

Two American landing ships sink off the coast of Saipan.

Tinian airfield is heavily damaged, but Guam and Saipan are beginning the be repaired. The runways are operational.

SS-5 sinks.

5 June

The forces around Saipan are preparing to launch a strike on the carrier force. The Dive bombers are about to raid the carriers in the hope of destroying a few. Oi is moving into strike a carrier force that is exposed from the main group west of Guam.

A raid is made on a carrier group, the group is intercepted and half the dive bombers are destroyed.
Saipan airfield is hit by 81 bombs in a large raid.

The battleships have arrive. Oi is returning to Peleilu to meet up with the battleship fleet. Soon the carriers must arrive.

Congrats on the first kill! Hopefully the first of many! Guess they draw straws to see who gets to fly by their lonesome?

Any more news on the carrier Chenago that you hit?

Saipan is raided, a handful of fighers oppose them. The airfield is pounded again.
Another wave of transports arrive at Saipan, our coastal guns score more hits.

The carriers arrive! the crews are put on combat footing.

7 June

American raids are nearly unopposed now. There aren't enough planes to make any notable air defence anymore and daily new troops arrive on saipan.
Oi and Sutzuki are transfered to the battleship fleet.

8 June

Saipan is being bombarded daily from the air with no resistance now.

The remaining fighter crews on the Marianas have been ordered to rest and wait to escort bombers.

Transfered Deadmeat to Ku S 316, a new group of Zero fighters recently arrived on Tinian airfield.

Kido Butai (Carrier fleet) and the battleships are heading for Saipan, the time to strike back is at hand!

9 June

KB launches a small attack on a carrier task force, the American CVL Anzio is hit by 4 torpedos and sunk! CVE Gambier and Kainin bay are sunk on a second raid!

American CVE sangamon is hit and set on fire by carrier aircraft.

The Battleships are spotted by the American carrier force, all 3 battleships are on fire! Musashi and Nagato are continually hit by bombs and torpedos and are heavily on fire :(

CVE sangomon is hit by our carrier aircraft and sunk!

By the end of the day Musashi has been crippled and on fire. She will probably sink.

10 June

The battleship fleet has been battered, but continue on towards Saipan to destroy the landing fleet.
The carrier fleet moves eastwards to engage the main carrier force of the Americans.

Yamato is hit by 2 torpedos from an American submarine, she is heavily damaged.

The battleship fleet engages enemies near Saipan,  Yamato sinks during the battle :(

Our attack on the carriers failed. The air forces didnt even get there before turning back. In the counter strike CV Junyo was hit and damaged. Then a second massive raid took place, heavily damaging all of the carriers.
The battleship Nagato also sank.

All the carriers are heavily damaged and attempting to return to Peleilu.

*Oi has taken heavy damage from an air raid. It's engines are disabled :(

11 June

Shokaku and Zuikaku are sunk despite a large dogfight :(
CV Hiyo and CVL Taiho are also sunk in a seperate attack.
CV's Chiyuda and Ryuhu also sunk!
Oi succumbs to its flooding and sinks.

The whole fleet is basicly destroyed. BB kongo and Musashi and a large part of the battleship fleet survived along with 2 carriers(might still be sunk), but thats it.

Points wise we are pretty much equal to Americans. I can't see any way to win, but I could play through the land battle on Saipan if you guys want :D

Gorons DD is still alive. I'm also still alive :D along with a fair amount of cruisers and destroyers.

Even with all the dive bombers i saved it wasnt enough to break through the hundreds of allied fighters :(

I will run through the rest of this quickly and see if we can hold saipan from the ground, and how badly we loose.

After that, I will do THE WHOLE WAR. I will make everyone a carrier torpedo bomber pilot next time, all in the same group, That way we will loost some friends :( but be useful all the time. be something good :D
