BTW, I'm trying a similar gambit in my PBEM, just with ships instead of islands... My invasion fleet goes in unsupported, hoping to get their attention. Also hope the search planes will just circle above it. Kido Butai lurking just inside the torpedo bombers' range, but under stealth camo.  ;)

What are the bombers, G4Ms? Dont move them they need the torpedo ordnance only the air HQ on the island will provide.

They'll most likely go Saipan first, if you can, locate the dive bombers on Guam, so they can support KB once the carrier duel begins. With some luck, they will go first, get eaten by the CAP but all fighters than took part to the fight will land for refueling and armament.

If you were thinking about giving squads diff planes, dont change them on the islands you were thinking about fighting for. The upgrade eats supplies, as does repairing the new planes...

KB's fighter force is mainly A6M5, or 5b, right?

Dont know about KB yet, but I believe so.

Guam is a good possibility for DB's. I'm going to try and stock Saipan up on supplies before they come. I'll put both the Base forces on Saipan instead of spreading them out, gamble on the yanks going for Saipan first.

Heh hopefully I will do as good as you against the PBEM guy  8)

I'm not sure when KB enters the scenario, a couple of days in i think. If thats so I will lurk by Guam to counter them if they do infact go for Guam first.

For the counter strike I was thinking of the following tactics:

Have Land based fighters sweep at maximum altitude to lure fighters into combat.
Have KB torpedo bombers and dive bombers skim the ocean for a low level counter attack on the Carriers. Not sure how effective this would be? I'd expect mass casualties though. My goal is to destroy the carriers or a few carriers at all costs though.

Dive bombers dive bomb only 10-15kft. Torpedo bombers dont matter, because they'll have to drop to the deck and slow down anyways. Altitude only effects long range flak(and even it very little), as long as its below 10,000. At 10kft and above they'll glide bomb with the 800kg bombs, if target is within normal range.

I'd almost put my bet on them launching first air strikes before you even smell them them, unless one of your submarines does. You wont have any land based fighters available because they are dead or they dont have enough range... Unless the Yanks for some reason decide to move right next to the islands.

PS. I dont think I'm that good against my PBEM opponent, just some luck and the Japs starting on top in the beginning of the war. 350 turns from now, 1/1/43, the situation might be inverted.  ;)

Mash them.
Yeah I wondered about the diving and whether it was modeled into the gam properly, or whether they could just bomb at ultra low altitudes to avoid being spotted. *Torps can hug the ground anyway, might give them(and AAA crews.) an accuracy edge.
I guess its a 10k bombing run.
I want my fighters to live :( I'll be doing a 60% LrCAP and hopefully they can put up a fight while KB goes after the carriers. Also the massed AA might give the fighters an additional edge.

The manual is a good read.  ;)

Some of the stuff in it is dated, and its annoying in that it doesnt even tell if if the "supply needed" is per week, month, or what, nor does it give you exact supply uses for aircraft repairs, sorties etc. But it does give you a pretty good idea on how the naval and air warfare work. Except it doesnt tell what the speed setting(cruise, mission, flank) does...  >:(

Cruise = cruise speed, slowest ship's cruise speed.
Mission = cruise, except amphibious task forces will time it so that sprinting the last step they approach midnight. Surface combat fleets will flank when reacting and retreating/pursuing.
Flank = forced flank speed, flank speed of the slowest ship.

I've read most of the manual ;) I want to bomb carriers not read text. Reading text(and writing) is what I do when i'm not bombing carriers.

Thanks for the mission speed thing, i'd wondered about that.

I did a dry run of a few turns just to see. I got absolutely slaughtered navy wise. But my land forces did pretty well.

about 20 or so :(

The carriers were most disappointing, they just got overwhelmed straight away. I think keeping the BB group with the Carriers is the only chance to survive. Also my fears about Guam were realised, just after Saipan they were bombing Guams airfields destroying my dive bombers on the ground. The heavy bombers I used to resupply Saipan from air, it worked well!
The CAPs didnt do too well, they inflicted casualties but not at an equitable level.

The only good part were the land forces who were managing to contain the Americans for a while, but the constant massive bombardments were reducing the effectiveness slowely.
The coastal guns were superb, they took out about 10 transports in all, one full of soldiers.

By the way, if any one of you is interested, I edited Scenario 1 to have Japanese names for all the Jap planes:

No more Oscars, Georges, Franks or Nells, but Hayabusas, Shidens, Hayates, Rikkos etc.  ;)

Hm, could I be a ship captain? Maybe one of the carriers or heavy cruisers?

This shall be almost as epic as the LP I plan on running of Medieval II: Total War when I finally get the game. I'm thinking of doing one of my very first game ever. So horrible deaths will be guaranteed for your amusement.
