Technically, you probably want plants, mostly, as the color sources.

Also, oil painting only really got big past the Rennaisance.  Egg tempera painting, frescos, and mosaics would probably be better ideas for general artworks.

Before Max_White comes in, remember that you can already do things like create blue stones that aren't in nature in the raws, and set up custom reactions to create a blue-painted block in some sort of custom workshop, and then construct those blue-painted blocks as your floors and walls.

I agree that we should concentrate more on the likes of egg tempera and mosaics, but I think oil painting wouldn't be too far-fetched for this fantasy setting. After all, even if it wasn't terribly common, it's been around for (at least) 1361 years. It's a nice idea.

Being able to paint the walls various colours would be cool, but the really interesting thing would be for paintings, wall-hangings, tapestries and so on making an appearance.

I personally don't think oil paintings are very dwarfy, but it would be cool if we had some kind of fancy-pants noble for it.

Dwarven Philosopher/Painter?  Hmm.  Could be interesting.

I do wish though that we'd get another aesthetic request:  pants.  (My dwarves stopped wearing any... need to get Toady to fix that uniforms bug before I have nightmares.)

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

I read the title as "Pants, an aesthetic request"

I'm for both ideas, really.

i will reach through my phone line and strangle the next twat that insists its cannon for male dorfs to wear dresses. i don't give a shit about 'social norms' i don't like the idea of my dorfs being a bunch of cross dressing weirdos. i actually find a straight cross dresser minding their own business to be worse then a actual queer who keeps trying to give me his phone number.

dude dorf dress code:
no more corsets, no more dresses and for the love of god no more short skirts!!!

(on a fun note though i did have an artifact short skirt valued at 300,000 dorf bucks... instantly triggers a massive migration wave followed by 3-4 raids...)

If you painted over a gold floor, would it lose value?

Given that the only value of a gold floor is that it is visibly made of gold, should painting over something replace it's material value? :P

That's like asking 'is a gold plated spoon worth the same as a soild gold spoon?' What goes into something gives it value, reguardless of if it is visiable.
