The Bay 12 Mafioso Chess Club?

I'd in, but I suck at chess.  Anyone got any good links for someone who knows how to play, but is just crappy?

Step 1: go to local library
Step 2: check out tome of 1000+ chess openings
Step 3: read it cover-to-cover, absorbing 100% of information
Step 4: alienate friends and family by becoming Chess Borg
Step 5: ?
Step 6: win chess games

Depends on what you want to learn, Toaster.

I, personally, enjoy Chessgames.com, mostly for the daily puzzle, but they also have a nice database of games with a lot of commentary.

Chess.com also has a daily puzzle that is playable and games database that is smaller, but they have a very nice forum and opening discussion.

I found a small site that is good for general opening knowledge called ChessOPs.com. You can test positions for the "best" moves, but it lacks explanations for why certain moves are bad.

There is a free program called Chess Positional Trainer (I think), which has a database of openings for download as well as user created ones, plus it tests your knowledge on specific openings and some general positions.

This is a good selection, plus they're all freeish. Some have membership only things, but it's not much.

A program on my computer that I rather like is called Chess Mentor. Basically just chess puzzles, but it goes in-depth into many strategies, tactics and gambits. Also, it walks you through famous historical chess games, which is really cool.

It's a bit pricey, however.

It used to be significantly less expensive, back when I got it.

The Bay 12 Mafioso Chess Club?
I'd certainly in for that. Much more interesting than the iSketch craze that took you guys over recently. It'd be as easy as people creating accounts where wuba and I played, friending each other and finding games there (maybe posting in the discussion topic when you'll be around). If more interest is sparked, we could set up tourneys and post results lists and whatnot.

If WUBA wins, can I be the next challenger?
I'm sure he (or I) would be glad to play a few games, but I don't think either of us will risk the soul/title thing that soon. The betting thing is interesting though; if you wish to issue a challenge, and both parties find the bet balanced, it should be doable.

As far as chess software, the long list of ChessMaster titles is pretty good, has plenty of different levels/personalities to play against, has puzzles, openings, book, endings, tutorials and so on, and old versions should be found on the discount bins of any store (or on abandonware sites). The version from 10 years ago should be less than five bucks, and it's certainly good enough. From the Free Software side, GNU-chess, phalanx, and glChess are all good and have lots of features. ChessBase is a more advanced one to build libraries of games and a depth of analysis sure to challenge even the most anal of players, but can be pricey.

About sites, I had not been on a chess site in a long time, but that chess.com one has plenty of low-rated people too, games seem to be plentiful, and the site functionality/interface is better than I had originally feared.

^ this. I'm in college, man.

But yeah, I'd definitely in for a B12 Chess thing. I'm not the best, but I think I'm a pretty skilled player with some room to improve. Playing against you guys might help me get better. And what could be classier than Internet chess?  :P

If you're bored Joker (or anybody), I might have some time in about 3-4 hours to play a game.

Just add me on Chess.com. Same name.

I'm severely out of practice but I'd love to play chess since NOBODY AT MY COLLEGE DOES.
