In Soviet Fortress?
« on: February 08, 2011, 01:21:59 am »

So, I'm getting kind of bored with the normal style fortress, so I decided I want to do a Soviet style fortress.  I'm currently planning on how to best accomplish this and thought it would be best to get some input from the wisdom of Bay12.

What I'm wondering is, where should I try to embark (After all, the Soviets did have Cuba), how to determine proper amount of Soviet exports, how to treat nobles, how to treat the Mayor/Expedition Leader/Supreme Soviet, How should I equip my military (should they all be equipped the same or should I allow some diversity), How will immigrants be treated, how should peasants be treated, how do I determine who works in which job.

You get the idea, if you have suggestions not related to any of the above, feel free to post those as well, I'm just genning up a bunch of worlds so I can search for a perfect Soviet Embark Site (S.E.S.).

Edit:  I settled on a name, Limarenkos Tinoth Kokeb, WealthTaken the Equality of Dwellers

Everytime anyone goes 'on break', he or she either
1. immediate military duty to absorb bolts/arrows
or
2. gulag. unassign all labors, and they get to go mine.

Part of the embark must be in the tundra. This is where the miners will work.
Everytime a noble's demands or mandates are not met, the guilty worker will be drafted or sent to mine.

Edit:
Make food and steel production quotas. If your fortress does not meet these quotas, military or mining.
Use dwarf therapist to assign labors to children.
Give female dwarfs that bear more than 12? children a special reward.

then make them do most hauling jobs.
disable most dwarves hauling labour first.

Since mining is an all-important facet of Dwarfhood, criminals shall be sentenced to 30 days Lye Making.

Weapons and armor should be your only export, and you should allow for numerous justice chains, preferably one chain per location, with a 1x1 tile for the room.  Or, place the chains outside, where prisoners can watch for ambushes.  Hammers should be your preferred weapon, but because of material type limitations, perhaps axes because they're similarly big, and very dwarfy.  Steel is preferred above all, with very high importance placed on your metalworkers, to the point that they get near-noble accommodations (which are still rather meager).  Commoners get small rooms, like a 1x1 room with 4 walls and 4 doors, to make a large grid of dormitories, or just make them all have a 1x1 bedroom that are all packed in.  Or no bedrooms, just a large dorm area.  Burial requirements are equally meager, with preferably open-air coffins (build a wall, then a floor, and build the coffin under that floor, then remove the floor, for an outdoor coffin) or simply mass burial plots with dozens of unlabeled coffins.  Nobles get assigned a coffin, but when they die, their coffin privileges are revoked.

If you'd like a very dwarfy decoration, I've made a custom armor stand that takes one each piece of armor and one weapon, plus an armor stand, to make a construction.  With good steel armor, this can make a royal bedroom instantly, or with cheap bronze it can simply be a display.  Sadly you cannot get the armor off it like you can with a barracks type of armor stand, but you can mass produce some copper armor to make some stands to give your areas a more military-focused look.  Who needs wimpy waterfalls?  We've got armor displays in our dining hall!

To truly follow in the footsteps of the great Soviet Union, you must do the following:

-Never touch a workshop-menu.  Ever.  All production is to be done through the manager who will issue quotas.  To make sure that you will always have the facilities to meet your quotas, you should construct one each of every type of workshop and furnace. But ONLY one.  Waste must be avoided at all costs.

-Recordkeeping is to be kept at maximum, but you should never actually check the stocks, just trust in a job well done.

-Stockpiles should all be set to accept all items.  We do not discriminate.

-Make sure to fulfill every mandate that your Bureaucrats(nobles) make, since through them the spirit of the revolution lives on.

-Your dwarves will all sleep in the People's Dormitory.  No private property, except what is needed by your Bureaucrats.

-Your entire population should be in the militia, so that they can be called upon to defend the homeland in times of need, and so that you can enforce a strict dress-code.

-Jobs are to be assigned to Dwarves in alphabetical order, regardless of skill or specialization.

-Plump helmets are the universal foodstuff.  You can eat them, cook them, and brew them into wine.  Truly the food of the people.

-And lastly...Zero Idlers.  There can be NO UNEMPLOYMENT in the fortress EVER, since unemployed dwarves are parasites on the society.  Haul rocks from one end of the fort to the other if you have to. Operate a bank of dry screw-pumps.  Designate holes in the ground as both pond and water-source.  Anything to prevent laziness.  Efficiency is paramount; Nothing can be more efficient than having all your dwarves working hard all the time.

Foolprooof way to penetrate aquifers of unlimited depth.  (Make sure to import at least 10 stones for mechanisms)
Toughen Dwarves by dropping stuff on them.  (Nothing too heavy though, and make sure to wear armor.)

Train all Dwarves in Engineering so they are all red. Accomplish this by building big pump arrays where they can manually pump air for no reason. This also prevents idlers.
Try to keep everyone content, not happier and not unhappier. So no legendary luxuries, only a great dormitory for everyone, crappy food etc.
Maybe you can give an elite of Dwarves some private properties and luxuries, you know, because some soviets Dwarves are MORE equal. ;)

Weapons and armor should be your only export

On the contrary. You must store all of the weapons and armour you can get your hands on. After all; one must be prepared for the threat posed by those filthy capitalists.

What needs to be exported is food. Rationing and export of those plump helmets ensures that you will always have metals, weapons and technology (trap components, perhaps?) flowing in to feed the growth of industry and military.

You shouldn't just have one of each workshop, oh no, you should make as many of each workshop as possible, then for no reason in particular (or maybe if you run out of something) make your entire population work on the same thing until you have a massive Z-level full stockpile (no bins) of just a single item, IE : pig tail socks/copper picks/toy hammers etc.
Then live off your stockpiles as long as possible while forcing everyone to make something else.
Remember, one dwarf producing pig tail socks for years will eventually start making elitist masterwork pigtail socks. Thats not very socialist, everyone should be making and using the exact same pigtail socks.
Mass produce or die.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

Use dwarf therapist to assign labors to children.
Doesn't actually work, though. I've tried it and even though the labor is activated, they won't perform the job.

It isn't a new Dwarf Fortress version until we're made to fear some kind of regular creature.  Carp, Elephants, Unicorns, Badgers, and now Mosquitos.  I've got 5 dorfBucks on the next one being plagues of groundhogs.

do forget to fight like a true socialist!

* 2 or 3  Weapons should be enough per full squad, if one dies the next can pick it up.
* fighting in strategic spots is for cowards, full frontal attack (with the entire force) is ALWAYS the honorable tactic.(waiting for all soldier to assemble before the charge would be allowed).
* crossbows can be issued, one bolt of ammo per crossbow in stock (fortress wide) should be enough.
* armor: in the face of equality armor will only be issued if there are enough pieces to supply every member of the military one.
* the quality of weapons and armor should never exceed decent. high quality items should be melted down and made into statues or trinkets for the commissariat.
* any comrade retreating from battle will be executed. a true comrade doesn't leave his brothers to fight alone. (includes wounded and crossbow users who think they need 'ammo' to fight).
* only a very select group of dwarves will get good weapons and armor. these are the personal guard of the Commissariat and should be patrolling the nobles quarter.
* under no circumstance should these guard engage in common battles they serve to protect the Commissariat and only the Commissariat.

some additional option:
* prisons should be excellently stocked (with chains and cages, not food).
* all Comrades renamed 'Comrade' name are for individualistic capitalistic pigs.
* the part of the fort visible to traders should be lined with decorative weapons and statues (of course forbidden of actual use) (golden ballistae have good decorative value i imagine.
* valuable metals and gems should be processed into statues and such and displayed in the nobles quarters. or possibly exported in exchange for plump helmets.

Production targets should be set for at least one year and cannot be changed; you should also favor producing industrial goods (e.g. trade items or even blocks/anvils) at the expense of consumer goods.  Bonus points if your dwarves suffer periodic shortages of food and alcohol as a result of misallocated production.

An industrial megaproject (e.g. a huge power plant or magma system) should also be built to simulate Soviet-style development.
