My map hasn't been updated.

EDIT: Also, there's no mention of my beast-capturing attempts. Did it not work, can't work, or what?

Fixed your map. As for beast capturing, I missed that order, but :rolls dice: they didn't find anything.

I assume that i will be able to speak the languages of both the dark elves and the gnomes next turn?

I do not understand why you would want to do such a thing. Their existence is completely uninteresting and transitory.

I'm thinking of offering them protection from you, and while i suspect that i couldn't take you alone, i don't think your forces could best both of us at the same time.

Uh-huh.

I think you might actually be in range, if you base your troops in the dark elven city. If you do that, though, I just raze Copperflow and switch to iron while focusing on defending Xeniice, and possibly building colonies across the sea. Naval supremacy would allow me to kill off any colonies you built, or just sack your capital if you tried to split your forces three ways. You might eventually break through, I might eventually get siege-ships able to damage your city and slowly whittle you down, or we'd just be easy pickings for IronyOwl and/or whoever's south of you.

Vanigo: Does the terrain composition of a colony matter? IE, if I were to build a specialized wood-harvesting colony in a square that's 25% forest, would wood production be significantly reduced from a full-forest colony?
Do colony costs ramp-up as more are built? It would be strange if I could just build fields of farming colonies that each cost 1 or 2 upkeep, each able to supply me with 2+ prosperity from food. Reducing the ramp-up costs could also be a research line, if you don't already have all techs planned out.

That's making quite a lot of assumptions.
The first one is that i want to try to kill you and feel like fighting a full on war, I don't, I just feel like getting some defense money from the dark elves and testing out a bit of my military.
The second one is that we are both able to see each other's cities (or colonies) to attack, from the looks of it, it would take quite a while to explore to me (or me explore to you), especially if their is active resistance to the exploration.
The third is that i would necessarily fight you at sea or on the coast, it would take me just as long to explore the route to your city by land as by sea (especially if we fought by sea you would be attacking me).
And even if we did fight at sea/coast, I still don't think you would be easily able to fight off both me and the dark elves.
On land, i think it would be a different story, while you have won every single battle against the dark elves, and i'm not sure about engaging you on my own (especially since our battles would end up being at some point in the next age with better units and tech, so the units we have currently would probably be irrelevent), with them allied with me (assuming they are smart enough to do so), you would be crushed.

EDIT:I don't have any real reasoning for it, but for some reason i think that irony is to your east. And i don't really see how he could be to my south, so i'm safe from him.
Happerry isn't a threat, due to his tiny exploration area (he hasn't even seen the sea yet), mabey he will contact the outside world at this point, but it will take a while.
Mabey Ahra could be to my south, but it doesn't seem like his costline lines up with mine (although it could farther out or something).
After further investigation, i found out that mine and ochita's coastline match up perfectly, so no one else is close enough to run into me soon.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I suspect that it means that it will be at least 10 turns before i contact anyone else, while you will probably run into Irony/Ahra far sooner then I will run into anyone.

No point in getting into an "I'd do this, you'd do that, so I'd do this." argument if it's not a full war.

Defending them as mercenaries would just be annoying, although I can't deny that it makes good strategic sense to do so. Just remember that their economy and military were recently devastated, and that I successfully annihilated all non-cavalry forces in my first attack.

Overall terrain doesn't matter all that much, usually. At colony size, the presence or absence of different terrain types is more important that overall composition. That, and rivers and special resources.
And no, cost is flat. They still cost three population each to build, and you'd need some sort of border patrol to defend them all.

Eh, one colony every three turns once I hit the limit of what my city can easily support is fairly decent, and I'd likely quickly be able to outsource my basic labor to the colonies and just focus on the manufacturing and research in Xeniice ... Until you interpret the event RNG to decide that <REDACTED>, anyway.

That, and rivers and special resources.
Sounds like a good use for expensive aqueducts.

The suspense of whether or not I successfully looted more precious sky diamonds is a bit disheartening, but at least I can rest easily with the knowledge that you would have quite probably already rolled for tribute if they'd accepted that, meaning I still get to kill them. Yay for dark elf killing.

Does what type of unit explores/surveys terrain make a difference in what type of special resources can occur there? Could ships find coastal iron or sky diamonds, or a landbound unit discover fish or pearls? Are the resources limited by location to begin with, ie there is no coastal iron in the same way there is no forest-bound rich fishing?

Resources are limited by location, in a "whatever feels about right" sort of way. Unit type doesn't matter much.

About time to start methinks.
EDIT: and i don't think you should bother waiting for him to call it turn 28, dunno if he will post it.
