Shouldn't my city just consume 3 more food to make up for the humiliating defeat (so that my population would be able to grow even with it)?

No. Combat happens after food consumption.

Just for fun, mostly. I have a slightly odd sense of fun.

Hurray, I finally have something to blame on the supposed disunity. The Kalron really haven't been very effective antagonists, though. Probably something about me not wanting to sabotage myself. I'm sure that somebody will be back to being annoying after Quara dies, though.

Oh, I should probably point this out now when nobody's in a position to get screwed over by it: All jewelry in this game counts as the same luxury, no matter what resource you made it out of.

What counts as an appropriate resource for jewelry? Gold and diamonds are obvious, but what about bronze? Iron? Tin?

Edit: Please skim my turn for errors, as I'm not completely sure when the population is removed.

Gold, silver, and any kind of gem. I guess you could use mithril and the like if you really wanted to.

As for the order of events, I really should formalize that. This is about what I've been doing:

Spoiler: Order of Events (click to show/hide)
So, let's see... I think the only thing to note is that your population will in fact increase, since population growth happens after the settlers leave. You might want to eat less food, in fact.

Thanks. That sounds a bit gamey somehow, but alright. I could certainly find something better to do with those farmers.

I'm not entirely happy with it myself, but I really don't want to make a dedicated 'population decrease due to building settlers' phase. Plus, you still have to have enough food to prevent starvation of the full population, and... wait... why did I put it before combat? There was a reason, I'm pretty sure...

No, I guess there wasn't. So it'd be this:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You will need 42 food to prevent population loss, then. Sorry about the confusion.

You know, Nirur, 48 food is 16 prosperity, not 14. 14 prosperity only takes 42 food.

Edit: Ahra, your numbers are all screwed up. You're trying to use your 13th labor twice, for the third consecutive turn. Also, you've apparently forgotten that your population increased and you've got a sixteenth labor. So that part works out okay. But then your food produced is wrong. And did you even notice when I told you that building improved farms when you've got so much unimproved terrain to worry about is a really really bad idea?

You do know that you could make the 2 labor into something more useful... 2 farms... And I should spend more labor making food, get some more free labor and stuff.

My count is correct if settlers cost 4 food.
