Orders screen is useless!!!

OMGQTFBBQ?!

So one fine winter, I was besieged by goblins. I immediately activated my military might, positioning the army in the fortificaitons and behind the traps, and told all the dwarves to stay inside. The latter did not seem to recall anyone already out there, but I was willing to let the hunter or two expire.

But lo, the dwarves continued leaving the fortress on gathering missions! The stone stockpile was there and they needed stone, so they'd just go. And when the first death occurred, more dwarves left the fortress to collect the bodies and their belongings, which were crawling with goblins! I immediately set food/animal/corpse gathering to 'ignore' but as the bloodbath escalated, so did the number of dwarves going outside! WHA?! Eventually I rushed out there with my military and chased the goblins off, but not before 15 dwarves kicked the bucket. Ahhh... where am I gonna get 15 caskets?!

On the upside, it will improve the food situation a little bit...

Use coffins, wood is too expensive.

Until the orders work properly, invest in some military, maybe buy some dogs from the human traders, breed and train them to be war dogs or atleast place a door at the fortress entrance and set to locked when the goblins come.

The 'stay inside' order is notirously ineffective.  Your best bet if you want to keep your dwarves indoors is to lock all the doors.

If you want to save the dwarves still outside, set up a two-door airlock thingy, lock the inner door, put all the outdoors dwarves into a squad, activate them, pull them into the outer chamber, and lock the door behind them.

I see. I didn't realize that the ineffectiveness of the orders was commonly-known or I would've locked things up better. Anyhow, while frustrating at the time, I guess the whole thing is amusing in retrospect. Here's the carnage for your enjoyment (and, as you can see in the top right, "ignore corpses" doesn't work either as that's a graveyard full of 'em).

This gives me an idea...

Floods can cover the entire map, right?  Those goblins need some cleaning, I think...

Wait, Arcanum!  They cover the entire map but it's only knee deep outside of the mountain. It won't drown anything.  :(

Ooo. When I reach the lava, I've got to try that someday.

Along with making a "tame" version of the time I destroyed the world in lava, so that I can project waves of lava at my foes.
