Plus, seriously, who wants to decorate their halls with cockroaches, anyway?

me! me! me!
not for myself,
for every dwarf of mine who hate cockroaches!

after all they should pay something for the good booze, mist generator, many pets, legendary prepared meals, engraved obsidian fortress and personal rooms, gold items which are basically everywhere, and a 15X24 swimming pool/dinning hall filled with masterfully/exceptionally decorated masterfully made furnitures on golden floor, surrounded by platinum statues of food, dwarves with food, or gods relating to food.

I have a stone mason who is OBSESSED with molluscs and invertebrates, carving DOZENS of clam and worm statues over his career. He also likes statues of groups of goblins taunting dwarves. I've considered building him a spookhouse to place these in, because it seems like these would be horrifying.

he got to legendary by walking in the front door and immediately going fey and making the most useless artifact ring to date.

This is a masterful horse hair ring.  All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.  It is not adorned with any hanging rings.  It is not menacing with any spikes.  It has the mystical effect of making your fortress wealth lower than it was before.

I think I found one of those in my bathtub once.

I have to ask, why do you have horse hair in your bathtub?

...

Presumably it's/wasn't not still attached to the horse? I find it pays to ask on these forums.

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then you kill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.

Almost all of my engravings/statues are of migrants getting impaled on wooden spikes. And fair enough; to date nothing else has happened in my fortress.

Dreamsbolts, my first fort to reach all the requirements for becoming a Mountainhome (although I have to wait another year for the caravan) has a lot of very carefully placed statues.

The corridor leading to the wells is decorated with a dozen statues of dwarves dying of dehydration. Just so you REALLY appreciate that drink of water.

The hospital is decorated with statues of the doctors, and dwarves dying of horrible diseases and injuries.

The west cloister of the throne room has statues of the expedition leader, mayors, the baron, etc. The east cloister celebrates the accomplishments of the common dwarves. Mostly statues of the creation of artifacts and striking down dangerous beasts.

The sheriff's office had statues of most of the past sheriffs, and dwarves being beaten or struck down for tantruming.

The trade depot has a masterwork statue of the god of fortresses, steel, forges, and booze, depicted as a female dwarf, laughing.

The baron's tomb has a statue of the foundation of Dreamsbolts, and an artifact statue of the Queen.

The atriums in the middle of the residential blocks have statues of local megabeasts.

There are a few other ones. The Stonemaster (legendary engraver and mason) has a few statues of himself, the manager has a statue in his office of himself terrified surrounded by fire imps, and that's all I can remember.

Oh yeah, 95% of these are all made by the same dwarf. I wish I had more marble, I don't want to use it up cranking out endless statues so I mostly use mica and gneiss.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.
