I have quite a number of interesting reasons why I partake in the delightful activity known as Dwarf Fortress Adventure Mode.  Primary among them is this:  BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!

I play adventure mode to avenge my past adventurers.

Stupid kobolds.

But then why did you play those past adventurers, if you had nothing to avenge?

I play because the elves won't kill themselves, you know!

I play adventure mode because it's hard and when I play, I am too.

Why do I play? Back in yonder days of 40d, I made my first adventurer. In his first instance of combat he killed a wolf, and then beat the rest of the pack to death with the corpse. There was just no going back.

That wasn't technically a miscarriage, but the doctors didn't have a concise term for "gave birth and immediately baptized the baby in liquid fire."

At first ir was because I couldn't get the hang of fortress mode (and I STILL can't figure out pumps), but then it was because I wanted to avenge all the kobalds mercilessly slaughtered by brutish adventurers - I mean, I spawned in a cave next to another Kobold with no legs?

I play adventure mode because "It is fun to psychotically bite a creature to bits, finger by finger, and throw each part back at them."

I play to fully illustrate to myself how truly hardcore a dwarf is.

This is a creature that will tear the throat out of a child with his or her teeth because the axe is lodged in a druid's neck, and his shield is being used to block the ineffective punches of the child's parent.

When he is done with this, he will skin polar bear simply for the challenge, then butcher it so he may eat the beast's heart.

Soon after his legs will be destroyed by an alligator and he will still drag himself hundreds of miles to complete a mission that has no reward because he was TOLD to kill that hydra by his mayor and no other reason.

When all is said and done he will likely then die because while he was asleep one of his traveling companions drowned in a river, leaving him alone, and a bogeyman came across him and realized that someone has to stop these monsters.

After accomplishing that, it just makes anything in my day that seemed worth bitching about to be pointless.

Two reasons:

One: I've been playing video games my entire life. I was two when I beat Super Mario Bros. (A feat I have not been able to replicate since.) When my father bought Final Fantasy 2, I became hooked on RPGs. I was lead to this game by finding a link on Tigsource, to a forum with a bunch of stories about characters and fortresses in this appearantly epic RPG. I download DF. I find it difficult due to ASCII, but I keep on it. Dwarf Fortress's Fortress mode is too complex for me to be patient with. I have my first epic adventure. Then I find graphics packs. I am now completely under the control of the most epic, in depth, hardcore and fun RPG known currently to man, as no other game has been divine-ly inspired, it's features and code handed directly down from the Gods into Our Lord, His Imperial Majesty Toady.

Two: In no other game have I been able to strangle two men at the same time, slam them to the ground while I kick back at another behind me, sending him flying into a wall, unconscious. When the origional two pass out, never before DF could I systematically break every bone, rip out internal organs, and then wait, while they suffer, to see if the survive. All because they dared to suggest that I would not be fine outside at night.

Because i can beat people to death with a fish. Slowly and horribly. Crack every single rib in their chest, blast said ribs through their internal organs, break every single limb with a vicious flurry of strikes from a magically manifested iron sturgeon, pummel the contents out of their stomach, paralyze them by breaking their spine, beat out their teeth, and finally, smash their faces in if they haven't bled to death. Extreme and unreasonable violence at its finest!

... Oh my goodness Dwarf Fortress really sets your inner sadist loose. And pumps him full of roids and various psychosis-inducing drugs while firing subliminal messages of extreme violence into his mind.

Which is just like saying that, yes, you may have cake. I also grant you permission to eat it. ON THE GROUNDS THAT YOU SACRIFICE ELVEN CHILDREN TO ME BEFORE HAND.
